I don't remember, David. I was in Waikiki. We didn't give it too much thought. We lived in a second story apartment on the Alawai [sp]Canal which everybody said had filled to overflowing in a previous Tsunami.

Been checking out scenes from Chile. Awful damage. The quake was like immensely more powerful than the one in Haiti.

An oceanographer on CNN made a quick note of saying the only confirmed Tsunami damage so far was in Ventura California. All the cameras are on Hawaii. Can't find anything on that yet...

Reports indicate that navigational buoys in Ventura Harbor have been damaged; no other reports of damage were mentioned.

Good one! Just got this from a friend who father is on Maui.

"My dad has a good sense of humor. When I phoned he answered the phone gargling ..as though he was under water .

He said he is safe.

I was so happy to hear his voice."

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

East Cape Report

Interesting day. The ocean receded an abnormal amount for a while and then it filled back in a bit. Rocks would be sticking out for a few minutes, and then they would go under. Not like when the swell covers them, but longer.

I paddled out around mid day on the stand up board and noticed lots of strange currents and eddies. It was low tide, but lots of rocks were sticking up that don't usually show. I kept thinking that if the outside reef shows itself, I'm outta' here. Then the submerged wreck in the bay made a showing and I decided that was it. I got out and watched from the deck of the house a good 45 feet above sea level. The swell has been only about 2 feet and I never did see a "wave" that would indicate the tsunami. Just the unusual rise and fall of the ocean.

No b-tchin\' in the Baja.

Jesse. If you've seen any of the photos or footage from Chile, you must know that there was major devastation. That said, folks in that region are accustomed to earthquakes and are fairly well prepared. Utilities have been damaged, with poles breaking and lines snapping. Not being able to get in touch with someone down there is understandable. If there's no power, it's hard to have communications. I truly hope for the best, my friend. I know it's frustrating. But in actuality, modern technology has made it possible to even know about such an event contemporaneously. Years ago, it might have taken days for folks in other countries to even be aware that such an event happened.

Not surprizingly, he also said it looked like a disaster movie with incredibly long lines at the gas stations and grocery stores. They expect the tsunami to hit around 1:20 PST. I'm glued to the TV waiting for further news

I was in Hawaii in 1961 during a "Tidal Wave Alert." That's what they called it. When the word went out, people everywhere were loading their cars with bird cages and clothes and heading for the hills.
The Wave never got there, but ironically it rained six inches in twelve hours over night. What a mess.

Dennis, I was in Hawaii for the big one in 1960. I was only 7 at the time but I remember being woken up in the middle of the night and heading for higher ground very distinctly. I suppose this was the one that hit Hilo so hard.

I assume your dad was in a branch of the service..........which one? We were living on base at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corp Air Facility.

Was just reading about the 1960 earthquake in Chile. That is still the strongest earthquake ever measure. THE QUAKE LASTED FOR 11 MINUTES!!!!
