A person hears that sound from a distance and then it becomes increasingly louder, it's not like some fool just flipped a switch and blasted a few million decibels into the air, yes it's annoying but very unlike "small bombs" going off unexpectedly and terrifying animals, people and being intentionally disruptive to many senses.

Those sound trucks are most times the ONLY way to let the people know current events, weather warnings, official announcements or just the simple fact of advertising that the water man is coming.

Some of us live in these small towns where there is NO other choice to get the word out.
Let them be.

Fireworks (to me) are as much a daily or fiesta custom of society in Mexico as it is in the Orient... and as it is in the United States on Independence Day. They are a reminder that war and guns are how we freed ourselves from the colonial brutality.

I have lived next to Camp Pendleton for over a dozen years, and while the explosions during training exercises annoys some, it is the sound of freedom to me. Another thing, Camp Pendleton, like celebrating with fireworks, existed before I came to Oceanside... or anyone here on Nomad traveled to Mexico.

This also reminds me of how stupid it seems when someone buys a home next to an airport, and then complains about the sound of planes and wants it to end!

And, the smell of napalm? What does that do for you?

Doncha think you're getting a little carried away with all the warrior symbolism, David?
I can't ever recall your mention of time served in the military? How could you deprive yourself of all that founding-fathers bonding? Seems to me you would have made weaponry and explosives part of your career choice.
Maybe there's still time.

Right? So annoying and have never heard a public safety announcement over them either. But, it's their country and they don't need a foreigner to change their customs.

I Just read all the posts.
So can I get those rockets wrapped in newspaper that veer all over the place and have a tremendous explosion at any time after you light the fuse?
I used to love those things.
How much do they cost now?
I will take a drive up the Los Planes road if I can get a deal on them.
I can deliver before the 4th as far down as La Rivera and Cabo Pulmo.

Yup, and those things can end up anywhere, including parts of your body. Good luck getting fast medical attention when you blow a few digits off, especially in Baja.

Hey Bubba, I use a little care.
OK, very little care.
I wouldn't hold one of those things lit if you paid me.

So how many can I put you down for?

I also remember Mexican-made mortars with instant fuses...look down the tube while lighting and die!

You can purchase fireworks in most towns, Mexico has a long tradition of celebrating with them, Kinda funny how many of you dislike so much about Mexico, and talk about it on a Baja board.

Being concerned about the effect explosives have on our pets isn't exactly Mexico bashing, but since you're so intent on accepting status quo and customs down here; how are you doing with decapitations?

The appropriateness of fireworks here, just like anywhere else on the planet is a question of location. It's one thing to set them off on a remote beach, but it's not appropriate to set them off in a residential neighborhood with kids, pets, and palapa roofs. I can tell you that a lot of the local Mexicans get annoyed by them also, around the 16th of September and New Years it gets a bit out hand in some areas, and I have had several friends lose their dogs due to the constant weeks long onslaught that begins early in the morning and goes until the wee hours. Just use some common sense.

You don't need to hold one of those to end up a mess Vandy, as stated in one of your earlier posts, those things "veer anywhere". No worries though, it's your digits that will end up missing, not mine.

You can put me down for zero Vandy, I lost interest in the 4th grade when I realized they were not only dangerous but very disrespectful as well.

Have fun reeking havoc and watching things go boom.

You're a pretty funny guy Honda and I'm sure you meant your post in jest? We all love Baja, that's the reason some of us voiced our opinions on disrupting the tranquility. Either way, have fun and carry plenty of cash, you'll eventually need it for medical.

"According to national statistics, animal control officials across the
country see a 30-60% increase in lost pets each year between July 4th and 6th.
In fact, July 5th is one of the busiest days of the year for shelters."

“Sadly, only 14% of lost pets are returned to their owners,
according to nationwide statistics. And worse, 30-60% of lost pets are
euthanized because they cannot be properly identified and returned to
their owners."

http://www.petamberalert.com/blog/keeping-your-pets-safe-on-...

The more fireworks, the more lost pets.

And don't forget the wildlife that get terrorized.

Skip the firecrackers.

True, but at the same time, we're talking about Fourth of July in Mexico, so I thought I could stray off line a bit.
