Lose the dog and the other girl and I think we can work something out!

Here's a nice little truck for you. Kinda halfway between a jeep and a big truck. I always like extracab and regular or longbed but this is alright.

Have driven a couple of rental cars down in Baja.:tumble:Didn't get too far off the pavement.:) Got a '92 Chevy 4x4 that's good to go most anywhere.:tumble: Been thru some pretty wild places and back. Will beef up the cooling system to make it run cool in the summer temps. :) If only I could get better miles/gallon.:tumble:

Well, it is either Toyota or Ford from the sound of the posts here. What happened to all the Dodge people?

If it is an easy to drive, reliable, affordable truck and you don't need full size, then a Tacoma is my choice... only because so many Baja amigos already had proven them superior... and then so did I with my 2001 xtra cab Tacoma (136,000 miles in 5 years). No breakdowns and only failures were a O2 sensor and a water pump at 90,000 miles that dripped! You should have seen where I took it in its 5 years!

In 2005 I traded up to a new, bigger, four door Tacoma. It is 1 1/2 years old now and has 53,000 miles on it... many in Baja.

No breakdowns and only two complaints: rear springs not stiff enough (bottoms out with a load, the way I drive) and the anti lock brakes (haven't failed but act strange and growl in slippery road conditions. My '01 never did and it had anti lock brakes, too).

My '01 at Mision Santa Maria followed by my '05 at la Bocana Beach... both Tacomas were 4WD and had the TRD package.

Baja_Girl, I have some friends that go to the Fishing for the Mission in Loreto every year. I will ask if any of them are driving down as like you they all usually fly as several of them have their own planes. Now as to trucks I still have a 1987 F-150 4X4 that has over 157,000 miles on it and I did have to work on the transmission and replace two water pumps and I put in a heavy duty radiator. I do not take the Ford truck to Mexico any longer, as I have a 2003 Chevy 2500 diesel truck that takes me everywhere and diesel is only about 1.80 a gallon in Mexico. Will let you know if I hear of someone going down. Most of these guys and women are professionals or in some type of government job or law enforcement. I will ask my wife if she knows of someone as she has an engineer at her work that motorcycles through Baja a lot and has gone all the way to Cabo on it. David,
that is an awesome truck - at the very least I know it will either be a "taco" - ay carumba (see earlier postings) - or a Ford F150...there are many trucks available in my price range - so the next thing to do is hit the streets...My mechanic friend favors the Toyota, but this is not to negate anything about the Ford Trucks - in fact, my personal experience is that the fords are awesome.
So, I will probably do what all baja girls when there is a big decision to be made: eeny, meeny, miney, moe...baja girls are fun to know, get an truck and off we go, eeny meeny, miney moe...works every time.

Baja_girl, in your pricerange, I would go 1/2 ton Ford or Chevy from the mid 90s. Probably less reliable than the Toys but so much more comfortable in the cab and so much more carrying capacity. I love 8 foot beds......uh, in trucks that is. The ride is also smoother and quieter.

The Dodges from that era tend to have creature comforts that fail

Just Another Vote For FORD..........If your smart you will find a 1995 or 1996 F 150 extended cab with an XLT package interior, with bucket cloth seats. Here's why!!.....The middle seatback folds down and and you have the most wonderful " pooch platform" . Your doggie can have his/her own aft compartment and when he/she needs a pet .she/he can put her head into the front seat and participate, with the grown ups. Check one out..:lol::lol:

Crusoe, nice advice. When I drive by construction sites... I always enjoy counting the number for Fords among the workers. 9 times out of 10 there are more Fords in the group than any other make. Ford has been the number one selling truck for way over 20 years in a row. 8-foot bed is a must, along with an upgraded XLT or Lariat package. I now have newer Ford trucks, but I still miss my old 1990 F150 with that straight 6-cyl inline engine and the 5-speed manual tranny. That was one great truck.

That's my 2-centavos worth.
