I have a MSM craving, anybody going soon?

I'll test my new suspension next week in a rockcrawling event and the winch is going in this weekend. Then I'll be ready for the trip again.

It would be sweet if I could... Maybe contact The Squarecircle and see if his Land Rover is ready to DO IT AGAIN!?

4WD is a help... it is just the overall size that is an issue... the MSM road is the closest thing to the Rubicon that Baja has... If your rig can do the Tahoe Rubican run (which is typiclly limited to Jeep CJ's/ Wranglers, FJ-40s, short w/b rigs), then you are in like Flint!

There is a steep arroyo crossing just 1.8 miles from Rancho Santa Ynez that is a good 'cattle gaurd' to keep out the mild mannered SUVs or over size pick ups from getting into any more trouble.

If you have a hard time with that first grade, it only gets a LOT worse, closer to the mission... the final 3-5 miles... with the Widowmaker being just over 1 mile from the mission.

We need to do a full size vehicle run into MSM to dispell any doubt that it can or can't be done. Bring your tow straps and winches. DK can be the rabbit. A complete report will follow, good bad and in between.

TW, though my rig is not exactly your typical fullsize vehicle, I'm in, but please don't be disappointed if I chicken out at the first sight, in person, of the widowmaker.

Check out the videos I posted in this thread; in your van it would be nearly impossible to make it. I'm sure it's very capable but MSM has BIG rocks and steep stuff recommended for smaller vehicles with a suspension that has a lot of travel or full lockers.

I think a full size truck might make it with some lift, lockers, big tires and an experienced driver that has done some rockcrawling. Not easy though.

With my jeep it would be impossible to pull a full size out of there.

Anyway, let's go. I'll promise to shoot some nice video of the full size trucks in action.
At least you guys can tow me back if I brake something. :tumble:

I've been in in my 93 Toyota extended cab with rear positraction. The only place I had trouble getting out was at the top of the widowmaker. When I tried going over the last big rocky section at the top one front wheel would come off the ground and I would loose front wheel pull and the rocks at my rear wheels were loose and caused the rear wheels to spin. After three running attemps I just floored it on the fourth and that gave me enough momentum to go over and get the front wheels down. Other than that a piece of cake. I now drive a 2004 GMC Z71 with a 2 inch leveling kit and 33 inch tires. I do carry a winch and lots of tow straps.

This could be an adventure like the Turquesa mine road with the Square Circle. What's a little adventure without a little risk?

Yeah, thats were I had a little bit of trouble too. I have open differentials and didn't feel like a locker was needed but I don't have IFS so the front travel is really good.

The Widowmaker 2007 (Going Down)

Here now are all the photos from 3 cameras of the Widowmaker Grade... 13 1/2 miles from Rancho Santa Ynez.

Going down, to the mission (just over a mile away) was my 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4 door TRD 4WD, and The Squarecircle's new Land Rover LR-3.

2 days later, we returned, going UP the Widowmaker... the hard way! Some of these photos have not been shown before...

Just before the Widowmaker, the road passes this mountainside oasis... Amazing is the year-round quantity of water pouring from nearly the top of the mountain!

The Widowmaker (so named after blood was shed by both BajaMur and I during our first attempt at climbing it on a motorcycle and quad, in 1999).

Presidents Day 2010

Presidents weekend is good for me. This could be a freight train that may live in infamy or be hailed as the greatest adventure since Lewis and Clark.

The Silver Streak is ready.
