I'd like to point out that my original query was specific in places for "wining and dining" - and that I was not looking for fish taco stands. I used an example of El Rey Sol possibly being along the lines of what I was looking for, and that places like Mariscos Bahia Ensenada or Mariscos Playa Azul were not.

I appreciate all the suggestions that have been made taking these thoughts into account.

I think of "fine dining" as a type of dining experience: the environment, dining room, tabletop, service, the menus and the depth of the wine/spirits lists. I'd consider the drive out to the Guadalupe Valley wine region for a memorable and unexpected fine dining experience. They are passionate about the local food and wine there (Baja-Med). jmo.

um. Dennis. It's almost noon already. Sunny and warm outside with a high chance of a Margarita. When the market's close in an hour I'm outta here. ;)

Well I'm off in about 15 minutes and it looks like it's time for some "fine" drinkin' ". Looks like Margarita time to me.
Note I said 'Fine drinkin' so as not to be off topic again. Least we be scolded........

Sushi..YUK!!!

I did not mention a sushi place...love ceviche and all seafood...but sushi??? yuk..I hate seaweed wrap!!! By the way I picked up some good looking caldo de res and Chile rellenos today in National City's New Vallarta's market, it was saltless and tasteless...moral of the story...never eat Mexican food in the States...its disappointing after living and eating a while in Mexico..especially Mexican food..

Over decades, we have favored El Rey Sol as the "go-to" spot for fine dining. Probably the best boneless rabbit I ever encountered.

That said, and I don't have absolute confirmation, but I believe that the owner, Jean Loup Bitterlin resides NOB most of the time in that past several years.

As a result, at least in my experience, the restaurant does have some off nights.

But, when they are on their game, you really cannot do better in the area.

Jean-Loup is the president of the Ensenada Hotel Association, spends his time in Ensenada like a good Ensenada business owner.

Yes, you can do better. Fine dining all over Ensenada.......try Sano's

Do they still have opera nights at El Rey Sol?

One of the first times I went there (about 12 years ago) about halfway through dinner a gentleman sat down and the piano and a very young lady came up to the piano and started singing an aria from "La Boheme". Beautiful voice. I was completely stunned. Last thing I would have expected.

I asked the waiter, and he explained that the pianist was a local teacher who brought in some of his pupils a couple of times/week to give them some experience performing in front of a crowd.

This happened a couple more times over the next five years or so, but it was impossible to predict when they would be there.

Is this still going on?

To me, a large part of the charm of eating there is that it is possible to envision how this was an outpost of old world culture in the old days of HWY 1. Can you imagine coming into Ensenada from the south, after days of travelling the old road, and having dinner at El Rey Sol?
