the moment magnitude scale theoretically has no upper limit, but the properties of crustal rocks limit the maximum magnitude to about 10. so you
won't be seeing any 11 magnitude quakes (don't know how that concept applies in the case of an asteroid strike).
the recent 8.9 in Japan is about the biggest they come.

The Jimena thread did not degenerate into liberal vs conservative debate.
It would be preferable to not see this thread wander off into some tangent unrelated to the thread topic, as a few try to convince themselves and
others of their political beliefs any time they see an opening.
There is a separate political forum is there not?

threw that title out there hoping to get Mr. Bile's take on that alternative.
So. As I write this, the Japanese nuclear emergency is still a work in progress. There are as many as four plants that are under scrutiny.
That said. Maybe I missed it, but beyond the front line issues with a nuclear plant meltdown, come the problems with what to do with spent fuel.
God knows that we have witnessed decades of debate over a California desert location to store spent nuclear fuel. The major objective has been the
risk of contamination to the water table adjacent to the Colorado River. In other words, if, perchance, the radioactive material migrated to the
Colorado upstream of a number of major water access points, much of Southern California could find itself without potable water.

For Us. Not the Nips, of course, since they'd need to import a LOT. From China ?
Reading the popular Scientific Magazines, the consensus seems to be that we DO have the technology to utilize massive amounts of coal for power
generation, including the Carbon Sequestration question.
The harvesting, of course, is a VERY messy business, but it only affects a small portion of the country so we can simply avoid going there. Out of
sight, out of mind, as they say.
We have plenty of scenic natural beauty elsewhere to enjoy and ignore the ugly areas. After all, we don't vacation in places like Watts or Downtown
Detroit. For different reasons, of course, but the idea holds true.
EVERY solution has its negatives. The choices we make should be those that make the MOST Economic sense for the MOST of us.
Period.

You were right and I was wrong.
The nuclear discussions are really unimportant compared to the devastation and hardships the Japanese people are undergoing.
The reports coming in are that the death toll will exceed 100,000. Entire townships have been virtually wiped off the map. Missing people swept out to
sea that nobody is even aware of except for those that float back.
You're right. Somehow it feels guilty talking about our petty concerns knowing what's happening right now across the Pacific.
