Baja May05 Trip Questions

My son and I are planning a trip around May 13th to celebrate his finishing finals at college. I'm bringing my CJ& with lockers down and hoping to do some wheeling and camping in Baja.

Anyone have suggestions for a good trip for a Friday afternoon to Monday format? We will be camping and hoping to do some moderate trails. Since we'll be alone...nothing too extreme. Would the Pole Trail Loop be good for this trip?

Mood: Pole Line Road postponed due to injury

I think the Pole Line Road would be excellent. Just be prepared to fix your rig if it breaks since this trail is real isolated. It will be hot out there, so best to bring a 2nd vehicle just in case you break down or need recovery help - there are sections of the trail that are pure cliffhanger. Overall, its a lot of fun - after 3 days on the trail, you can get cleaned up in San Felipe. A great hotel there is the Costa Azul - $60/night incl. an ocean view...

Not a good idea to do the Pole Line Road alone. Too isolated if you break down. If you choose it, ask for company on this board.

I suggest you cross the border at Tecate and go east to the Santa Veronica turnoff and go south on the sand road toward Ojos Negros then east toward Laguna Hanson. You could also go to La Rumorosa and come down to Laguna Hanson. Anyway at El Rayo jct go south picking up the Baja 1000 course east of El Alamo and following it down the Goat Trail to Valle De La Trinidad. From there you can take the road to Mikes Sky Rancho (not well marked) or drive the hwy to Mikes turn off near San Matias. Stay over night at mikes, give or take $45 each includes dinner and breakfast, or you can camp. Remember your about 3500 ft so nights can get cold.

Take the west route out of mikes to El Coyote and pick up the Observatory road near Melings Ranch. Go up and take a look. You have to park and walk the last mile to the observatory. There are camp grounds along the way but again your even higher in elevation (10,000 ft peak). Back down the Observatory road to hwy one. Cross it and go out to the Pacific and pick up the coastal trail north. Good camping at the sand dunes at San Antonio Delmar. south side is a camp area out of the sand and high above the water. Take fishing pole. Continue north to Santo Tomas and Ensenada and hwy 3 back to Tecate.

I just gave you a quik rundown, if interested I can give you better details and some other routes. I do suggest a Baja Alamnac.

TW, that is an excellent route!

In case Daraidz does not want to tackle so much off roading in one trip, he could go up to the Observatory and /or check out various mission and petroglyph sites (San Fernando, Las Pintas), visit geologic sites (El Marmol, El Volcan), go to Gonzaga Bay (with many side trips right there: http://vivabaja.com/1102/page2.html )... L.A. Bay has tons of places to explore too!
