TIP for trailerable boat
Hi all, first time taking a towed vessel to Baja. Can someone enlighten me on how to go about getting a TIP permit to bring my boat down there? Do I
even need one?
Thanx in advance!

"if the boat is over 4.5 meters long, you will need to get a boat TIP"

And of course you will need registration documents for the trailer. If the trailer registration is not in your name, you will need more paperwork
giving you permission to pull it.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

I've been found lacking in trailer documentation....but fortunately a 20 dollar gratuity made the problem vanish.

DiscoverBaja Travel Club.
Easiest way is to fill out form online with these guys. They submit your info and email you the TIP. They say it takes about 2 weeks. They took less
than a week for my new boat.
Saves you the hassle of stopping at the border and filling it out and going back and forth between the aduana and banjercito.
I called DiscoverBaja to ensure they had my application and that all was in order and they were very friendly and helpful. Great customer service.
Highly recommend them.
*make several copies and keep one on the boat, one in your truck, one at home. You dont want to lose the TIP and try to replace it.

I've gotten TIPs two times for boats. Just took the boat to Banjercito at the border. They didn't inspect it or anything.
I've taken dirt bikes into Sonora many times and unlike Baja, Sonora requires you to get a TIP for your truck when pulling or carrying dirt bikes/RZR,
etc. You can do this online (https://www.banjercito.com.mx/registroVehiculos/#). Not sure if you can do a boat online or not. Worth a try.
I read this on here a while back and if a boat can't be done online I intend to call her to get one for my new boat:
"I used someone in Ensenada who will do the paperwork for you and you don't need to be present. Her name is Michelle Aguillar
(info@bcconnection.com.mx) and her website is www.bcconnection.com.mx. Everything is done through email and she'll email you the TIP same day. It was $260 but the TIP is good for 10 years."

TIP
I did this recently at the Mexicali East crossing. As previously stated had all documents in duplicate as well as the pictures of the serial numbers
on the engines. The customs inspector came out and did an inspection of the VIN on the trailer, boat and both engine numbers. I suggest you get in
early as there was a line forming of Mexicans bringing in truck loads of stuff. The agent was very professional and thorough. Be advised sometimes
finding the VIN on a boat trailer can be a challenge, knowing where the numbers are in advance speeds up the inspection time.

Does anybody know the process of renewing an expired TIP and what is the current cost? My boat is still located in Bahía Asunción, and I was
planning on stopping at the aduana/banjercito in Tecate to renew the TIP on my next trip down (I brought back all of the necessary paperwork with me).
Will I have to return to the border with the trailer and boat? The boat is a 18’ Klamath. TIA.

I pretty sure you have to have them cancel the old one and get a new one. You'll need to do it at the border unless you are in a bigger city like La
Paz, Ensenada, Guaymas/San Carlos where the marina can do it for you.

I am a bit of a do it yourself kinda guy... Plus these travel clubs want a little more personal information than I am willing to give out on the
internet. Surely someone on this site has gotten their own TIP before... What are the rules and what is the process? Is there a monetary deposit? How
does it work?

I got the TIP for my previous boat at the San Luis Rio Colorado port. Tried to get one in Algodones and was told they don't issue them there.
In SLRC, you pull up in far right lane when entering Mexico, military or customs personnel will open and close the lane for you to park there while
you go into the office and fill out the forms. They will walk out with you to your boat and trailer and inspect VIN on boat, trailer and check engine
#'s.
Then you go back into their office and wait for them to do their thing. When ready, they will send you to the Banjercito to pay for your TIP. Once
paid, they send you back to the original office to show proof of payment and they issue your TIP. Then you are good to return to your vehicle and boat
and have the inspector look over your rig again. Depends on the day as to how thorough they are....
I recommend getting there early in the morning (like 6:00AM) to avoid long lines. Discover Baja is convenient because you save a lot of time and
potential hassle dealing with the process when you are southbound and excited to get to your destination.
TIP cost at Banjercito depends on the current exchange rate but I think it's around $50 USD. They accept pesos and credit card.
Good luck

San Luis Rio Colorado
It may be back to normal now, but in April it was a clusterf*** of blocked roads and detours! It would have been no fun pulling a trailer through
there, let alone parking to get an FFM or TIP.
What about the commercial port of entry east of the main public crossing, do they handle TIPs there?
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

I did mine at K21 in Sonora, South of Nogales. Take your documentation to the Banjercito office. They have to be originals, not copies. They do
want copies of everything for their file though. K21has a booth for making copies.
They will want to see your passport, boat registration or Coast Guard certificate of documentation, Visa. They will send you to the bank to pay
the fees.

Is back to normal now. But is NEVER a good time navigating the government offices and waiting in their lines.... DiscoverBaja is a bargain!
