Question about fishing lures
"M" asked me to post for her:
She will be shore fishing at Bahia de los Angeles next week. What type of lures or plastics should she use?

Fishing lures
I always use gold "crocadiles", some with a thin red stripe down the side. They can be anywhere from 2" to 4" long. Get the namebrand "crocadile" as
they usually are heavier than the cheapees, and are easier to cast out with a spinning rod and reel.

kastmasters, et al
I like 1/2 oz chrome kastmasters for bottom fish like spotted bay bass and halibut.
Cast out as far as you can and let it sink to the bottom. Reel in line with a long sweeping swing of the rod. Allow the lure to settle to the bottom
at the end of each swing before starting the next swing. Retrieve slack line between swings. You know you have it right if the rod tip vibrates during
the swings. Most takes occur at the very start of the swing, as the lure comes up off the bottom. Don't bother trying to fish by continuously reeling
in the lure - (a) it lifts the lure out of the zone and (b) it doesn't look as natural.
Krocodiles work well for midwater fish like ladyfish and corvina.
Plastic grubs also work well using the same technique as kastmaster. Only the swings are smaller and vertical. The take is often on the drop so the
line needs to be kept tight while the lure is sinking. Spotted bay bass love these grubs. Motoroil is a good color. Buy a bag full and replace them as
they get chewed up. My wife once caught 2 spotted bay bass on a single hook with a grub. They were hooked lip to lip!!

I would also so take some lucky lures also called lucky joes, they are a string of about 8 small hooks with feathers attached for catching small bait
fish from shore. Then put the bait on a larger pole with a 1or 2 ounce sliding egg sinker then you are fishing off the beach with live bait!! Can't
get much better than that.

Lucky joes!!!!!! Fish story, when fishing in CBO 80s from my boat using lucky joes to get bait all of a sudden my line went slack, so I start to reel
in fast when a Marlin jumped close to the boat, to make a long story short I caught the fish very little fight because he was all wrapped up in the
line. Got cheers from everyone around thank goodness we had witnesses.

I like scampi's. I have caught many different species at the Bay with them. I use the brown ones with the metal flake. They come in several sizes.

A marlin caught on Lucky joes!!!!!!!!
That must be some story. I, for one, would love to hear that one. I know the fishing is great in baja - but that's ridiculous. Don't make the long
story short. Make the short story long.

Punta Colorado, 1976. Lots of boats bunched around a mackerel spot when somebody hooked a marlin on a Lucky Joe right in the middle. Lots of wet
fishermen.

From shore, I use krocodiles or medium-size minnows like Jointed Rebel rapalas, great for spotted bay bass!!

but the only place I got lucky in BoLA was from a boat, catching lincods, after the frustration of a day spent at la Gringa, trying from shore without
success..... good luck!!!

Michelle's not going to have much luck fishing from shore. The only things she's bound to catch is Puffer fish. It's not like it used to be when one
could walk out to the end of Villa Vita's breakwater and pull in Lenguado y Cabrilla.
You never know, she may get lucky, the fisherwoman that she is!
If you gals have an extra day to explore, head down to Playa Rafael, say hello to Pancho, and fish from the shore there in front of his house. Great
halibut fishing when the tide is at it's mean high. Use a crocodile. We were there this past Spring Break and the Grunion were running mid-day, it was
a sight to see.

Lucky joes and Marlin I think why they have been caught on lucky joes is that you catch a mackerel then hes easy bait for the Marlin, In my case he
had wrapped himself up in the rig with 3-4 hooks in him there was very little fight.

Fishing Lures
Back when I was a young teenager (1959), my Dad met a guy (probably in a bar) who made fishing Jigs in his garage in East Los Angeles. His name was
Davey Rudin and he manufactured only one style of Jig and in one color (white). In later years, the style became ubiquitous. My dad recognized his
name because he was always being quoted by Lupi Saldana, a sportswriter for The L.A. Mirror. Davey's "Lucky David" Jigs were very popular, probably
the more so because of all the free publicity. Davey owned a house in Ensenada in a working class neighborhood and would go there fishing on a
regular basis.
As a result of Dad's new found friend, we took a trip with Rudin and another of his friends down to Ensenada for a two-day trip. On the first day
out, the four of us took a total of 80+ Yellowtail, Barracuda and Bonito in about 4 hours. The second day we took only 40+ using ONLY Lucky David
Jigs. Davey himself had 5 or 6 poles rigged so that if he lost his jig during a hot run he could instantly get another in the water.
As a result of that fabulous trip, I bought that type of Jig for many years with good results, but never like that. I suppose another reason for my
indelible memories of that trip was that we spent the first evening there sampling the Adult offerings of Mexico, another first for me at the tender
age of 14.
Of course, back in those years it was probably difficult to NOT catch a lot of fish in Baja, no matter what type of tackle you used.
