TIP Questions

The TIP for my 18’ Klamath expired September 2023. I will need to cancel it and obtain a new one. I’ll be crossing at Otay Mesa and will have all necessary paperwork. Does anyone have exact directions to the Banjercito office at this POE?

You don't need to cancel something that has expired.

The Banjercito is located in the same building as Immigration and just down the hallway from Immigration.

You definitely need to cancel your TIP before you can get a new one. They usually want to see the boat to prove you are still in possession of it and you did not sell it in Mexico. Lots of people don't cancel there TIPs. But if later one sells the boat and if the new owners need a TIP the can of worms is opened.

BTW an alternative office for your TIP works would be the Immigration office in Ensenada located across the street from Agencia Arjonas. There is a Banjercito in the same building.

Thank you DJ. Google maps shows a building across the street from Agencia Arjonas but labels the building as “Customs Office” and not Immigration. Is that where I should take my boat and trailer and what’s the parking situation like there? I’ll be towing up from Bahía Asunción and would like to avoid having to go to the border. TIA, Paul.

Do a Google Maps search for Banjercito Otay Mesa. There are a couple of Banjercito offices in Otay but you want the one on Fray Junipero Serra street for your TIP.

That is the place. Their main purpose is customs but they issue TIPs and cancel them there too. The woman running the TIP deal there is very by the book but she knows the book very well and is very helpful teaching one to explain and learn the book.

They clear immigration for boaters there entering by sea at Ensenada. If you are driving and ask for a visa it can get complicated. The immigration man used to be a real pain for drive ins but surprisingly has gotten softer and much nicer. Nonetheless, drive ins should get their visas at their port on entry.

Was hoping you wouldn't ask about parking there. It is tight. But the guard at the gate which is right past the office and goes into the working side of the harbor can help you out. IMO parking at the border going northbound to cancel the TIP would be even more difficult given you are towing.

Tijuana's crossings, both Otay and Chaparral, are a real pia to approach due to ongoing road construction. Ensenada, given the fact you are driving from down south, might be your best bet.

Good luck!
