SAN FELIPE NEWS?

I've been hearing about cartel trouble in San Felipe; crime, attacks, a 7:00pm curfew, etc. What's the consensus on risk if I get past town by mid-afternoon in 1 or 1 1/2 weeks? Gracias!

Ignore media, pay attention to State Dept. recommendations, relax. Worry about bad hombres on Mainland, not Baja.

Well that's not good to hear!

I am in Calexico at the moment, and if the line isn't too bad at west crossing, I will be in Baja very shorty.

I don't have a phone plan that allows me to use a WIFI hot spot, so I will be checking for any updated info when I find another place to log in.

"San Felipe is simply NOT SAFE right now…
In light of the most recent wave of violence in San Felipe and only a minimum response from the local or state authorities, we feel it is our responsibility to speak out and advise our members to avoid travel to the San Felipe area for the time being.
There is a struggle for power in San Felipe right now between the Cartels and the government.
In recent days there have been a chain of violent attacks and homicides on private citizens in the area as well as a Cartel imposed curfew on the town under the threat of violence / death. In the video threat posted online, it also said that any taxis out circulating after dark would be stopped and burned.
The only official response from the local Municipal Government was an announcement of “increased patrols and checkpoints” while at the same time insisting that it is safe for tourists to travel to the port city on the Gulf of California.
State public security authorities have routinely been responsive when we have reached out to them with such concerns but have not responded to our recent concerns, possibly because of the timing in this Holiday Season.
Reviewing Spanish language social media for the local San Felipe area, the general population is taking this threat seriously, with the mostly barren streets at night in town evidence of their fear.
Living down here full-time for well over 2 decades has taught me to pay attention to what the locals say and do in such scenarios, especially in the void of a strong, official response.
OUR ADVICE
If you were planning to travel to the San Felipe area in the coming days, we recommend you delay those plans or consider an alternative itinerary to another region of the peninsula.
If you are already in San Felipe for a visit, consider your options and whether it makes sense to leave right now. If you stay, remain indoors as much as possible, especially after dark. There are transport options in town to get food/supplies safely delivered to your door if needed.
Please do not risk driving in San Felipe after dark right now, you should take the curfew threat seriously…"

So the curfew is imposed by cartel sicarios?
And is it sunset to sunrise?
What is the point of curfew, just simple terrorism? Or is there a demand that must be met before stopping curfew?

Fake report?
Here is the city response

Ayuntamiento de San Felipe

San Felipe, December 26, 2024 – In view of the recent rumors that have been circulating through various media and social networks, we inform the citizens that the announced curfew is NOT true. This information is completely FAKE.
We urge all residents of San Felipe to stay informed only through the official channels of the City Council and the relevant authorities.
We ask you to avoid spreading rumors and always check official sources.
Carefully,
Ayuntamiento de San Felipe.

??? I sure read a lot more accounts of random disappeared people and burnt-out vehicles in Baja than on the mainland. There's definitely hot spots to avoid on the mainland, but plenty of safe areas, too. Of course, very few places in the the world are guaranteed safe. You can be unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time anywhere.
And worrying is always pointless. Staying informed and keeping your wits about you, not doing dumb things like driving at night and changing your plans if it seems warranted.

Just surfed the san felipe social media….
A mess of misinfo…
Usual baja fanboys saying san felipe is safer than anywhere in usa… ya, sure, you betcha (world is full of idiots)…
Some telling 3rd hand stories of doom and gloom..
City govt saying the curfew is fake news…
No apparent truth visible…

I was in town this morning. Seemed to be about normal activity level with stores and gas stations open. Did notice one taco stand closed that is normally open. Calimax was crowded. Police activity normal and no extra security at the military base. Plenty of RVs on the road.

Take this what it's worth tomorrow's a new day.

Since San Felipe separated from the Mexicali municipality it seems the violence has increased. Don't know if it's San Felipe police and leadership vs the cartel. Or cartel vs cartel. But it has increased. Very sad used to be a small quiet town no more.
