Highway 2

runs along the south side of the border from Mexicali through San Luis, Sonoita/Sonoyta. You can also make a trip down through Pinacate from there if you are headed to Pe?asco. If not, you head to Caborca but you need special permits to go past there for your car. Not sure what the current requirements are though.

Last Nov. you had to get a auto permit - have to have registration for the vehicle in your name. Permit cost about $30 on credit card only. Visa/MC. Must have visa - FMT, FM3, FM2. You can get FMT at imigration right there. (do it first) Your car permit will be issued for the length of time your visa is valid. Vehicle permit must be removed by customs when you return or they will give you other papers if you want to continue to have it. (for later trips, etc.) It must be removed BY CUSTOMS before the expiration date. Don't think it's changed much since then.
