Cabo Fishing Report - September 29th - Marlin - Sailfish

Cabo San Lucas – Marlin and Sailfish Near Whale’s Head – September 29, 2026

A six-hour run aboard the 35' Riviera Blue Water with Blue Sky Cabo Fishing and Charters produced a marlin and sailfish on September 29, with both billfish released after being found surprisingly close to Cabo San Lucas.

Captain Oscar had three anglers aboard for the 7:30 AM departure. The interesting part of this trip was that there was no need to make a long run toward one of Cabo’s distant offshore fishing grounds. Both billfish came from water approximately two miles off Whale’s Head.

Cabo Trip Snapshot

Boat: 35' Riviera Blue Water | Captain: Oscar | Anglers: 3
Charter: 6 Hours | Start: 7:30 AM | Finish: 1:30 PM
Catch: 2 Billfish | Marlin: 1 | Sailfish: 1
Released: 2 | Release Percentage: 100% | Species: 2
Location: Whale’s Head | Offshore: ~2 Miles | Dredge: Yes
Water: ~87.8°F | Air: ~83–86°F | Wind: ~11–12 mph

Rather than covering a lot of ocean, Oscar concentrated the trolling effort around the productive water once the crew found the right signs.

Blue Water was pulling a dredge as part of the presentation. With only six hours available, finding fish close to Cabo gave the crew considerably more time to keep lines working instead of spending the morning traveling.

The first billfish to cooperate was the marlin.

After the fight and some time alongside Blue Water, the fish was released. The second encounter added something different to the report—a sailfish. That fish was also released, completing a two-species, two-release morning.

The warm water was another notable number. Sea temperature was approximately 87.8°F, consistent with the warm conditions around the tip of Baja in late September.

For anyone who follows Cabo reports, the location is probably the most interesting part of this one. Good billfish action does not always mean running 20, 30 or 40 miles offshore.

On this particular morning, approximately two miles off Whale’s Head was enough.

Six hours, three anglers and two different billfish species made for a simple final tally:

1 marlin + 1 sailfish + 2 releases + 100% release rate.

A solid late-September morning on the Pacific side of Cabo.
