East Cape Fishing

It seems like the East Cape is off to a slow start this year . Any comments on why ? I know here in Phoenix we have had a very mild spring . Is the water not warm enough yet ? I will be fishing the East Cape in three weeks with six buddies . I sure hope it picks up .

Fezzie, the warm water is here. What happened was too much bait in the water (not sardines). Great schools of small squid, langostina, macerela, bonita made the bite slow and far from shore (40 miles). It will be picking up now. Lots of mullety near shore but no sardines yet. When the fish are no longer full they'll scatter, come closer to shore, the count will go up. Follow Pompano, use barbless hooks and you'll be able to release the 3 out of 4 small dorado, save the keeper for dinner.

Osprey , thanks for the info . I am just looking forward to getting back down there and away from this freaking lousy desk . If the fishing is good it is just an added bonus but in the mean time I will say a prayer to the fish gods .

The hotel boats are doing pretty good on Marlin. Until today's catch, dorado and tuna have been really scarce.
All cruisers are going off the lighthouse and around to Frailes, and then out East.
The private boats haven't caught much at all. In fact, dismal is this year so far.
Many fishermen are packing up and leaving, shaking their heads.

The fleet of hotel boats now number over 200, plus all the privates, and this is a lot of hooks in the water.

I will tomorrow going out where the fish are supposed to be. I will catch something before they are all gone.

Remember the buffalo? Fish will be next, at least here.

Very disturbing news mrchuck . Sounds like all the greed ,gill netting and purse seiners are taking their toll down there . Osprey said there was to much bait in the water . Sounds to me like there is not enough predators in the water to eat all the bait . You said a lot of fisherman are leaving shaking their heads , I wonder if they are going to spend the money next year to come back . Anyway I see bajafly report says the tuna are showing up now so maybe it will start to turn around now . Thanks for the report and I hope you got into something today .
regards

Bait, there is NO quality live bait here in Los Barriles.
The bait sellers only have had "jurels" or "rayadilla" for the last 3 weeks.
Where has all the bait gone, who knows.
Also 0 sardines here available. A few sardines can be bought up North at Cerralvo Island. The live mackeral dissapeared then.

Almost all of the 200 cruisers went towards the North East this morning trying to find where the fish schools are.
Nothing is close by.
The water here in the Los Palmas bay is green, smells of sewage, and there is a diesel slick in the bouy line. And this is with an East wind blowing, and lits of waves.
Pure pollution caused by too many human beings and their activities.

The smaller tin boat fleet catches nothing these days.
Of course, once in a while one of them gets a marlin, or a dorado.

But the days of a wide open bite is gone forever.

I still fish, but it is like an addiction, instead of lots of fish to catch.

Great news I guess there is no need for me to bring down a cooler this year . Maybe in 10 years I can bring my two sons down there to catch a few puffer fish . I think I will start drinking early tonight .

The problem is that I am on the water fishing most of the time.
Fishing, then gassing and maintaining and getting ready again.
About half of all hotel cruisers now come back skunked, yes, nothing.

The "no catch" is now a regular thing.

This has gotten more and more common until it is now a reality that it will happen to you. And it does, with much more frequency than before.
Ever before.

The fish stocks are more scarce than ever this year.
Yes, the water is colder this time of year than ever before.
But the real problem is that the fish are out in the middle section of the Sea of Cortez 50 miles out,and difficult to get to unless you have a 35' Cabo Flybridge, twin diesel cruiser.
And you have that exact cruiser!.
I am sure that even your fish catch is way down from past years.

With the fishing hotels here still propangandizing "come on down, the fishing is wide open", and the fishermen return with hardly anything, don't you think it's time for the truth to come out.
Maybe the new Gambling Hotel Casinos that will be coming in soon can take up the recreational slack.

And I will still be out there fishing between the cruise ships, whenever that happens,,,,,mc
