A Taste of Tijuana 5-19-05
Last night, BajaNomad (Doug), Baja Angel (Elizabeth), and I went together to check out the Taste of Tijuana event... it was great!
We parked on the U.S. side ($7) and walked across... passed the yellow cabs and got a TAXI LIBRE, that took us right to the event at the La Candelaria
restaurant, next door to La Diferencia... fare for the ride was only $3.
There was a name tag, wine glass, and a place to drop your business card (for door prizes later) station to the outdoor event... LOT'S OF PEOPLE...
many arrived by bus from the states.
Several restaurants were represented each serving their finest specialties... it was a buffet, and we just had to find a line and get in... We sampled
dishes from three restaurants...
Three wineries were there, as well as the Tijuana Brewery... all serving two or more varieties of their liquid pleasure...
Nomads 'jeans', and 'Mexico Ted' were there as well as the Discover Baja Travel Club crew where we sat and chatted with Hugh and Carol Kramer (the
owners of DB)... and we talked with Paula McDonald too.
We went over to La Diferencia and they called a cab for us to take us back to the border... $7.
What a great time... we had a blast!
OH, the whole evening for all three of us cost less than $20, as the food and drinks were FREE! The idea of Taste of Tijuana (see Doug's post on the
Baja News forum) is to introduce people to the various fine restaurants in Tijuana... to create more business... It was very generous and left a GOOD
TASTE in our mouth!!!

It was ALL good... The area was really packed (full house) and I couldn't see the restaurant's names except for Cien Anos, which had a big banner
abover their table.
Monte Xanc, L.A. Cetto were two of the three wineries there...
Bruce, it was all really good... We had food from three of the several restaurants represented. Oh, the flowing chocolate fountain for dipping the big
strawberries was awesome, too.

A girlfriend & I were part of the bussed-in contingent. Free bus rides were provided from various SD locations.
To answer your question, Bruce, it was hard to tell which restaurant was serving from which chafing dish as the people crowded around the serving
tables. They were set up in a tight rectangle in the middle of a large patio.
A better arrangement would have been separate tables for each restaraunt on the perimeter of the patio, separated by the various winery tables. But
it was still fun, with a lot of great food.
The evening was to promote the Restaraunt Passport, which was on sale. I intended to buy another one (I had one last year), but got distracted by the
chocolate fountain on the way out. The Passport is also available at Discover Baja. Last year it was $10 and that entitled you to a glass of wine,
an appetizer, and a cab ride back to the border in 9 different restaurants in town. Discover Baja arranges group dining trips, and they are a blast.
I look forward to enjoying another year of the Restaruant Passport season.

It sounds like a great time, and I don't care what Me-No is going to have to say about it.

As David K mentioned I was there too and had a wonderful time. The event was professionally planned and the food, from all restaurants, was great.
Next year, they plan a better layout and better promotion I am told.
