? about fish

what is the max amount of days i can keep filets on ice? fish will be in freezer bags, submergered in ice water and replentished with block ice or cubes as needed until i get home and can freeze it.

i bought one of the new "5 day" coolers that will keep ice for, uh, 5 days. we won't be going into it except to add ice as needed.

Have the "ice House" shave the ice for you in your cooler...
when it melts, a little, it becomes a block on top
Fish can last forever...or until this melts....anyway, a long time

How cold do you want to keep it? The faster the ice melts the colder it is in the cooler. When I worked for the railroads and we transported perishables in ice cooled refrigerator cars, salt would be added to make the ice melt faster - thereby cooling the load more. Things like lettuce had 2% salt but frozen meats were kept frozen acorss the whole US by adding 20% or 25% and occasionally 33% salt (by weight). It's nice to have ice last a long time, but it isn't transfering the cold unless it's melting.

And always put the ice on top.
