Trip to LA Bay 31 May to 6 June

We led out a three vehicle caravan from San Diego to LA Bay at 4AM on Tuesday May 31. We were towing an 18? Bayliner. We stopped at the border in TJ to pick up the free 7 day Visas that we thought we needed. The immigration office is now back up by the pedestrian gate at the border crossing. Three of the guys had filled out the visa forms before they said they wanted the free 7 day visas. The immigration officer said they didn?t need a visa but since they had filled them out he stamped them and gave them to them. Guess we were in Baja!!??

We arrived in LA Bay ten hours later after a smooth trip picking up gas at El Rosario. We checked in at Daggetts; first time we ever stayed in a room as my wife, daughter and granddaughter were all with us. My son and his wife stayed in my truck camper and three of his friends from Nebraska stayed in a room as well. Igor and Ruben?s family were having a family barbecue after all the tournament excitement of the previous weekend. We checked about the meeting time for the following morning with Igor as we were able to get him for one day of our trip. We launched the Bayliner at Guillermo?s and made a run over to Don Juan Cove for an afternoon swim. One of the Nebraska visitors got wacked by a stingray. Larry saved the day by telling us the cure of putting the sting under water as hot as you can stand it. They even provided the pan and hot water!!

Igor was waiting at the ramp the next morning, Wednesday, June 1 at 530AM and off we went; first to a reef in the bay and then off to the south. Trolling live bait was the order of the day. We ended up with 3 yellows and a bunch of grouper. Igor now has a freezer for keeping the fish. This worked great for us as we were down for almost a week. Igor is one of the most personable and professional fishing guides I have ever been out with. He is far more talented than the average panga driver. He just keeps getting better and better!!

Thursday June 2 ended up being a blow out day as did Friday, June 3. The west wind was blowing hard day and night. Some of the group went to the San Borja Mission and others went to the south part of the bay fishing for triggers and spotted bass and water skiing. The south bay varied from a mill pond to some chop. It is much more protected by the mountains to the west.

Saturday we fished with Ruben Daggett and ended up with 6 yellows on slow trolled mackeral. Sunday June 5 ended up being the big day with limits of yellowtail all around. They were boiling on the surface between Smith Island and the coast. A large flotilla of pangas and gringo boats were having a heyday. Our biggest went 25lbs on the scale but most were 7-12 lbs. Big squid were boiling as well. It was jigs and flylined bait time.

We had some fantastic meals at Raquel?s Restaurant. One night it was steamed clams, baked clams, grouper veracruz, grouper garlic and butter, rice, beans and tortillas. Another night was a huge tray of flan. Then there was the pizza night with a great chocolate cake. Raquel does a great job with some advanced planning even for big groups. I am including a couple of photos of some of her cooking as I know you are all tired of looking at ugly old guys holding up fish!! The first phot is Raquel with her chocolate cake.

Right on. We were there for the week b4 and left on the 2nd. Glad to here the wind backed off and the Jurel picked up for you. That wind gets to suck after a bit.... such a beautiful area, though.

Amanda's Restaurant

We have eaten at Amanda's Restaurant before but it always had the closed sign up when we were there. Like most things in Mexico, if we had asked they probably would have opened it up for us but there were no other folks around. We have eaten in the restaurant before but frankly Raquel's was alot better and it is just next door. Raquel and Larry left to visit their kids in Chula Vista the last morning when we had breakfast before we left. We "pre-ordered" the night before. Without Raquel the quality was lower; the hash browns were quite chewy!!! She definately has an influence over her quality.

Roomrates

I don't know what Raquel and Larry's rates are. We stayed at Daggetts and they are $45 for 2 and $5 for each additional person. No air conditioning. Nice clean facilities. I think Raquel and Larry's are more expensive but they do have air. We like to spread our business around; eat at Raquel's, stay at Rubin's and fish with Igor. We did stop by for a visit at the new hotel further down the beach. Very plush rooms on the beach for $100+ with swimming pool and jacuzzi's, microwave oven, refrigerator, sattelite TV, air, etc.
