12 volt freezers.....
looking for a 12 volt freezer. Camping World (yes, I know they suck!) has a 40 quart 110/12volt for about $500, I know there must be a better deal
somewhere...please advise, Thanks....

Deb, you must be referring to....
......the Coleman. That price will be hard to beat for a 12v unit except for a used unit. JR's option would, of course, require that you build some
type of enclosure and probably mount it. RV types are not happy with being unlevel.
I have the Norcold model and it is an exceptional unit....but it is much more expensive. Draws very little electrity and is whisper quiet. It acts as
a fridge or freezer, depending on the setting. Will operate even 30 degrees (in angle) off of level.
If you decide on the Coleman, go see it in operation somewhere. Some fridge/freezer units have very loud fans. From what I read on the CW site, they
apparently have a frozen section and a fridge section that operate at the same time. Mine is all one or the other....but I bought it to use as a
freezer anyway.
Be aware that, unless you have a separate battery system, you need to be careful with operating it while you are not driving. There are formulas to
figure how long you can operate it without driving but they involve specifics on the type of battery your car has, the type of alternator your car has
and the draw of the Coleman.
BTW, I am a fan of Camping World. The parent company is huge and owns just about everything related to RV's but their prices are usually very good.
And they are complete stores.

Those Engels
Look identical to the Norcolds, although it appears they are sized differently. Pricing is better than the Norcolds, too, although they dont list 24
volt operation.

My buddy had an Engel... shipped twice the manufacturer the first year for repair. Maybe he just had bad luck or maybe it's not made for too much
baja. His next one will be a fridge freeze.

Well, the FridgeFreeze is, no doubt about it, head and shoulders above the rest. They are used a lot in the medical industry, to carry "specimens",
medicine, etc. in cases where temperature stability is critical. Mine will make ice in less than two hours in the heat of the Cortez summer! They are
also built like tanks,literally, and are quite economical in terms of electrical usage.

A close friend who visits me often here in Baja has (2) of the Engels. No complaints, no problems. The older of the two is the better since the
newer one uses a different refrigerant.

Sounds like my Norcold
can't touch the performance of Fridgefreeze unit. It took about 24 hours to freeze about 20 lbs of yellowtail fillets in 80-85 degree heat. They
started from room temp, basically, right off the cleaning table.
It draws 3.1 amps @ 12v. I have the 45 liter unit.

Probably. I notice on mine that it says "manufactured FOR Norcold". They are made in Thailand.

Its the other way around. ARB gets their fridge/freezers from Engel. I have an ARB 45 qt and it keeps my beer plenty cold (will freeze it if I turn it
to low), have never had any problems in 2 years (knock on head). That's why I love it. And while I believe the Fridge Freeze brand made in San Diego
is a better unit, it costs 3 times as much.

Hey Mike, I thought you guys were supposed to knock on your wooden leg. Oh, thats right, they don't make those things out of wood any more.
For those that don't know bajaxplorer, he is the one made famoso in "Dust to Glory". That shot where he is standing next to Coco, each with a peg
leg.

Where you going to be the fourth? You and the Misses should come over to Yho and I's for a couple of days. Nice and cool compared to Yuma, or Vegas

Hi Tom,
It's true, peg is carbon fiber while head remains ironwood.
We'll be at kids in NorCal for the 4th then over to Tonopah to do radio relay for the BITD NV1000. Say Hi to Yho for us.
