MEXICALI, Mexico - 07/07/05 - IBM and the government of Mexican state Baja California have launched an open source software technology center.

The center is installed in the Mexicali campus of the CETYS Higher Education Institute and received the support of the Ministry of Economics.

IBM has invested more than $1 billion in developing Linux products globally and currently has 12,000 contracts worldwide with existing Linux customers around the world, the IT giant said.

Last year, IBM signed an agreement with the Brazilian government to build a similar center.

"There is an international trend in the different sectors of industry to take advantage of open source systems," said IBM M?xico general manager Jos? D?curneux.

"The public and private sectors are seeking ways to save costs and improve interoperability, meaning they need professionals that can give technical support and support the migration to these new technologies. The objective of this new center is to develop those professionals," he said.

The project will be developed in two phases - the first will be dedicated to a nine-month training scheme in the use of open source software, while the second will focus on incubating companies and creating work opportunities with international firms, which will then develop applications for the Mexican government, public institutions, and specific market niches, the company said in a statement released to the press.

There was another recent headline RE IBM:

Laying off 13,000 workers in the US; hiring 14,000 in India.

Bye-bye, Middle Class.
