utility bills?

I'm wondering what other people consider normal for CFE expenses? Our bill currently remains in the 180 pesos per month range (bill is received every other month). We have 3 tv's and all the normal creature comforts that a house is accustomed to. The weather in Ensenada is pleasant so we haven't had to turn on the AC yet.

Gas runs 200 pesos per month and the water bill at 80 or so pesos. Less than $50 dollars for all utility expenses including the garrafones of drinkable water that we have to buy.

The CFE bill is in the name of the guy we rent the house from. He's a govt employee and gets charged 5 cents a kwh.

CFE 600/2 = 300/month
CESPE 80/month
propane 340/month

all above in pesos.

gas is higher than it used to be because we installed a gas burning fireplace for winter.

All MUCH less than we used to pay in Central California. Love not having to have A/C.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret:

If you buy and install your own transformer, (this obviously is meant for a business or collection of homes) then you too can get the "employee" discount. You can reduce your electric bills by 60% or more.

So CFE basically gives you a discount if you do the work yourself? Not bad. Where we live, (Loma Dorada--nice uper middle class Mexican colonia or fraccionamiento) everything is underground, so I'm thinking that wouldn't work for us. Besides, 30 bucks/month for electricity still feels like a wonderful bargain.

Will this work anywhere in Baja or only in Ensenada? I just purchased property in San Felipe and is in contruction. My lot does have a transformer yet.

Anywhere in Mexico. Here's the deal:

You must purchase and install your own transformer. (I would highly recommend using a qualified electrician.) CFE will run the lines from the pole to the transformer which must be located on your property and fenced/secured according to CFE's specs. You are responsible for maintainence and if the transformer fries, replacement. You then become a utility wholesaler.

Depending on size, figure $3,500 & up for the transformer and additional for installation. This obviously only makes sense if you (or a group) will use enough to make it pay.

We did it for our business strip. My electric went from 6500 to 2900 pesos per month. Cost of transformer and installation was $9,200.
