Paper Nautilus


Around October we start seeing these on the beach regularly. I cannot for the life of me figure out how they make it through the rough surf and survive in one piece. This shell is literally paper thin.
Every now and then we find one with the animal still alive inside and we reintroduce him/her into the sea, and wish them good luck.

He sure was Judy. I liked him more than Ansel Adams.

There was a Weston Gallery in Carmel, maybe it's still there. Anyway, these JPG images don't do the man justice. The gallery has these poster size prints that are just magnificent. As the print develops and the silver stains it creates this beautiful almost platinum like effect that is so pleasing. Those F64 people with their 8X10 negatives and razor sharp images were true masters.

My dad loved photography. After school, I would get together with him in the darkroom and help him print. I remember sitting with the red light on while he dodged a print by holding his hand over the aperture counting: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. There, it's done - he would say. His fingers were always stained yellow from the fixer or developer I remember. Or maybe those were nicotine stains.
