Ferreras sets 'No Limits' dive mark

By KIM MCCOY

CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO - Off the coast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Pipin Ferreras set a 'No Limits' free diving world record of 558 feet.

The record took 2 minutes 39 seconds.

Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of the death of his wife, Audrey Mestre. She died after plunging into waters off the Dominican Republic with a target depth of 561 feet.

''This was a very difficult and sad dive for me,'' he said. ``Audrey did the dive with me and helped me make it back.''

Ferreras and Mestre captured the free diving world's attention shortly after they met in Cabo San Lucas in 1996.

At the time, the Cuban-born Ferreras was well known as a world-class competitor in the sport.

Between 1996 and 2002, the couple produced and participated in more than 20 feature films and television documentaries.

Ferrerras' dive, which was done in honor of his late wife, included several team members from Mestre's failed attempt.

The emotional trauma and physical stress made the dive the most difficult of Ferreras's career, which started in the 1980s, he said.

Several hundred people witnessed the event; most of them in a ring of vessels that surrounded the dive site.

Film director James Cameron, who directed Titanic, used manned submersibles and above- and below-water cameras to document the feat.

The dive was at 11:30 a.m. in calm seas and light winds.

The water temperature at the surface was 82 degrees and 55 degrees at 558 feet.

For the first 100 feet of Pipin's descent, the water was deep blue and clear.

Beyond this depth the visibility dropped to 8 feet.

''It was an honor to be in the water filming,'' Cameron said. ``I was very moved by this man and what he accomplished today.''

''The depth was confirmed using a precision instrument carried on Pipin's back,'' said Kim McCoy, physical oceanographer with Ocean Sensors, Inc., in San Diego. ``The cylindrical device, which contains a micro-processor, is accurate to within 3 inches, and has been used to certify free-diving world records since 1995.''

At a press conference in Cabo San Lucas after the dive, Pipin said: ``My success was due to the excellent work of an international team. We spent several weeks checking the dive systems and our techniques so that we could achieve our goal.''

A year ago, Pipin Ferreras' world was abruptly changed by his wife's death.

Today with this homage-dive and world record behind him, he is focused on the challenge of going to greater depths.

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico -- You don't want to get in a breath-holding contest with Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras.

Ferreras broke his world record for no-limits free diving Sunday, descending 558 feet in Los Cabos Bay on just one breath.

The dive took about 2 minutes, 40 seconds. Ferreras plummeted to record depth using a weighted sled, then rocketed to the surface when his air tanks inflated.

Ferreras, who was born in Cuba but lives in Miami, founded the International Association of Free Divers. He set the mark of 531 1/2 feet in January 2000.

But it's dangerous business.

Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of the death of his wife, Audrey Mestre. She died after plunging into waters off the Dominican Republic with a target depth of 561 feet.

After Ferreras' record dive, fans presented him with a bouquet. He threw the white flowers into the ocean one by one in tribute to his wife.
