Fonda del Rio-Part Deux

Hit this place for the second time this past Sunday night. We were lured by the flyers that had been distributed on the doors of the campo where we were staying. The DAILY 3-6 happy hour caught our eyes, complete with food specials.

After walking the beach for a while we sat on the bottom outdoor patio. We ended up getting chips and salsa, chicken wings done Buffalo-style (sure seemed like Frank's hot sauce), two margaritas, one vodka tonic, two beers (XX lager and Tecate on tap) and two bottled waters for 12.00 total, apparently including tax.

The wings were really pretty good; I've had much inferior versions state-side. Eight in an order; order ranch dressing if you want it, too. They are VERY slightly coated with crumbs. We ordered ours muy frito and they were. Also comes with some Frank's on the side.

Really like the downstairs pation in the afternoon. A better viewing area than the original La Fonda. As usual, the service, even at happy hour, was stellar. Waiter was always right there if a drink was getting low.

We hit the place for dinner later that night and I had the filet mignon with the bacon slice wrapped around the outside. Delicious, although slightly more cooked than I ordered (medium rare, it was barely pink). My wife had the dorado al mojo de ajo.

The tortilla soup is definitely the soup to order. Better than the bean soup or the clam chowder.

Their red wine selection was minimal (all they had was an LA Cetto CAb) and so we brought in a bottle of Marquis-Phillips 2001 S-2 Cab from Australis. We agreed to the 10.00 corkage but it became only 5.00 on the bill. Nice!

I'm really starting to like this place. If I lived nearby, this would be my happy hour of choice.
