Broadband Service in Loreto

Does anyone know the best service provider(s) for bandwidth in Loreto? I will need access a few months a year. Consistent availability is more important than speed. Actually, Nopolo area, outside of Town. Thanks in advance....gracias!

Prodigy thru TelCel is the only game in town. Dial up and DSL. It may be easier to pay for an entire year as apposed to getting it hooked up each time you come down.

How's the service? Do you have a rough idea of costs? I'm sure I'll have to set it up on an ongoing basis. I suppose an alternative would be satellite maybe. Gracias.

It was fifty bucks a month for dsl when I signed up two years ago. Not sure if it has changed for new hook up. The service has been quite good, very few outages.

Yes, it is handled by Telmex the phone company. The bill is included with your telephone statement.

Bill, that is not DSL. That is the price for dialup. Check out the speed and connection for Infinitum, the TelMex DSL. It is a really fast and reliable connection.

Prodigy Breadband Special

HI there,

I have a commercial account for DSL with Prodigy/TelMex and it is $599 pesos per month. I was the ninth person to sign up when it arrived here in Loreto. I have the fast speed service called 512K and it uploads as fast as it downloads. Important for streaming a webcam or for uploading files to my website.

There is a special rate of $249 pesos per month for a slower speed DSL that is available for residential and commercial accounts.

Hope that helps, see you in Loreto sometime.

Pam

I forgot to add that when I have several systems on a router I do not notice any decrease in speed on upload or download. This is not true of the slower speed DSL.

Just got my phone bill today with DSL service charge flyer.

New rates Infinitum 512 $449 per Mo. plus tax 10% =5928 per year inc. tax

Infinitum 1000 $649 per mo. plus tax 10%=8568 per. year inc. tax

I personally will deal with the slower speed for the difference in charges.

$1499 per year inc. tax.

Satellite is an alternative. I am a certified DirecWay installer and it is great.

However, if you have the opportunity to get DSL and it costs no more than 660 pesos/month (the approximate cost in pesos for DirecWay) you are far better off with DSL.

DirecWay is perfect if you do not have access to DSL. But its upload speeds are not anywhere near what DSL does. Download speeds are adequate.

You can offset the price of DSL by using an American VoIP provider for all long distance calls to the US and in Mexico.

Any VoiP recommendations? I hear Vonage is most popular, but quality is not so hot. I'm trying to establish the ability to webex and conference to the US for occasional work...in other words..I can get long weekends in Loreto and still do my work if I have good connectivity.

Gracias!

I use Crystal Voice and it works perfectly. The quailty is just like a land line and you CAN do conference calls with it. Most folks are using Vonage but I;m not sure why. Crystal Voice requires no hardware, I use a good quality headset/microphone. This on the DSL at my shop.

At home I also use Crystal Voice where I have a Direcway satellite connection, but it is only for personal calls because the delay makes it impossible to conduct business calls.

You CAN spend long weekends here!

Thanks Pam!! Now that's the beauty of technology. I'll have a lot better view than here in SoCal. Appreciate the real world input from everyone as I do my research to ensure I can spend as much time as possible in Nopolo/Loreto. I do want to hook up with you about fishing too.....Muchos Gracias

Skype is great but, I like the convenience of a handset. With traditional VoIP you can plug in your cordless phone and use it untethered. If you have a a long range cordless you can range out widely (70 miles) with mobility and still have full convenient use. Check out http://www.4cellular.com/cordless/

We provide wholesale business class (and quality) VoIP across the US and soon Canada. We can also obtain telephone numbers in the large percentage of foreign countries. I am working with a friend to create a retail service for expatriates abroad.

Pam, are you using Crystal Voice on a per minute basis?

If you have a US VoIP number, you may be riding on our network as we resell to all of the Vonage types as well as carrying some of the Skype-in and Skype-out traffic.
