Woody-

I often find it at Beverages and More....I just checked the website and didn't find it, though (www.bevmo.com) You might give them a call. They have special ordered things for me in the past.

They had Noche Buena in TJ Costco last Saturday.

Bev Mo in La Jolla did not have it today and said they probably won't but were not sure?

The same company that makes Tecate, Bohemia.

It is only made during the holidays. It's a dark beer and very tasty.

I believe it is from Tecate... They clean out the bottom of the beer vats before winter and get the dark stuff from there...:o

personal note on another dark beer:

Negra Modelo was the sponsor of the '79 Baja 1000, and the night before the race, was flowing at the Bahia Hotel (race headquarters), where we were dancing and drinking... The next day 'tenemos cabezas grandes'... but, we got the racer off at the appointed start time!

After we broke down, and I hiked a mile (in my race/fire suit) for help from locals, and got us towed back to Ensenada by our pit team, all that Negra Modelo decided it didn't like me any more... :barf:

I haven't had it since! (Although, at the time, it was a pretty good dark beer).

I used to think that too, about bock- it does mean "bottom" in German, I think. But, I've been informed that's not the case, that it's not really made from the sediment etc. Why it's only made in winter in Mexico and spring in Europe, I don't know- a worthy research project.

Yah, I was sure that was a rumor... after getting so sick on the stuff, I decided it was a good story! (I got sick from over drinking, THEN racing in the Baja 1000, hiking up a hill for help, etc., not from the beer quality)

OOOPS... Let me correct the story... It was NEGRA MODELO, not Noche Buena! It has been 26 years, and I don't drink dark beers any more since then... However, I did sample the Tijuana Brewery's dark beer, and it was excellent! (I will edit the above post)

The brewery that makes the beer is FEMSA. They also make Carta Blanca, Tecate, Tecate Light, Superior, Sol, Dos Equis Lager, Dos Equis Ambar, Indio, and Bohemia.

Their English language site is at
http://www.femsa.com/qsomos_sub.asp?sub_id=cerveza

for a good review of the beer go to

Bock means goat. Why is a beer called goat? No idea. Bock is not made in the spring, but it's a lager (stored) beer, and that's when it's ready. It's made in the winter, and the timing is traditional. Of course, you can get Bock beer anytime now, at least in Deutschland. Bock beer can be either light or dark (helles/dunkel), but it is higher in malt (and alcolhol) than a "regular" beer.

Anyone ever had Elephant beer from Carlsberg? Really strong taste and kick.
Funny I always heard it was the bottom of the barrel. The thought of the bottom of the goat makes me shiver.

I stand corrected. That's good info. I know a guy by the name of Rob Bock. Next time I see him it's "Hello, Mr. Goat."

Maybe the name has something to do with getting butted or knocked on your butt.

I should have said "sold" in winter vs. spring instead of "made".
