ROSARITO BEACH, Mexico, Nov. 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Baja State Secretary of Tourism Alejandro Moreno Medina and Mayor Antonio Macias Garay today announced the launch of a major annual campaign to promote this city as an ideal holiday getaway for U.S. residents. The "Relax ... Celebrate The Holidays in Rosarito!" campaign this year will be funded by approximately $200,000 in state and local funds. It will include print and electronic advertising, billboards, public relations and a Southern California media tour.

"Many people think of Rosarito Beach primarily as a beautiful summer destination," Moreno said, "But, especially for Southern Californians, it also is the perfect holiday destination for leisurely shopping, celebrations or a restful way to end the year." One of the goals of the annual campaign is to have people view Baja as an appealing year-round getaway, not just a summer destination, Moreno said. "We'll be giving people excellent reasons to make Rosarito Beach an annual holiday tradition," Moreno said.

The campaign will focus on the convenience, affordability and selection of shops, restaurants, hotels and other attractions in the beachfront city 20 miles south of San Diego, where tourism is a major industry, the secretary said. The campaign's emphasis will be on the Southern California area, he said. The Rosarito Beach Tourist and Convention Bureau as well as Baja are sponsoring the new yearly marketing campaign.

"For decades, U.S. visitors have been well aware of the attractions of Rosarito Beach in the summer," Rosarito Beach Mayor Macias said. "We also want them to be aware of the holiday benefits is presents. We offer a festive yet relaxed atmosphere. For people looking for holiday gifts, our many shops offer art, hand-made crafts, leather, silver and ceramics, all at low prices and in a setting less crowded than malls. Beyond that, it is lobster season and the whales are migrating along the coast," Macias said. "It is one of the most scenic and festive times of the year here. It's a perfect time for a getaway only a short, scenic drive away."

The holiday season falls and at a time when Rosarito Beach hotels offer their lowest yearly rates, Macias said. Among special events scheduled in Rosarito Beach are a tree lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. on Dec. 9. "Overall, it's a festive yet relaxed atmosphere," Macias said.
