Rancho Leonero - lobster

Will be spending a week(3/14-22) at R.L. kayak fishing... anyone had experience there??? ...what are the chances of buying lobster from the locals to enhance the dinners???? should we buy tequila(which ones!!!) near the Cabo airport and take with us or is there a better alternative... we will need a copius amount of Pacifico also..... we are taking a van from the airport to the resort... where should we stop for the beer/tequila/ straw hats.......

Well you have picked a beautiful place, that is for sure!
It is isolated, which I assume you know.
I would buy tequila(dont know which one but someone else can help you with that!) and straw hats at the airport before you leave. Once you leave the airport headed for RL, there is very little in the way of stores. Your other choice would be to go to Los Barilles which is past RL.
In order to do Pacificos you would have to buy the case and pay for the bottles, buy a cooler and ice(which may or may not be availabe at Rancho) and then return the bottles for your deposit. And I am sure that you will only drink one case in a week. Personally I would just buy the beer there...I dont know what they charge but keeping a cooler full of beer and ice would be a challange.
That said, ask your driver. Is the hotel sending someone? If so, he can surely help you.
The lobster question is interesting. I doubt that you will find anyone to buy it from direct but I bet the hotel could find you some for a price. The meals there do become monotonous but they usually have fresh fish unless their boats arent catching anything...and hopefully you will have some from your kayak fishing which is excellent in that area most of the time. There is a video out on fishing there. You can find that on my web site which is listed below.(Sorry for the commercialization of your question but you might find it interesting) U2U me for details.
I envy your having a week there. OH bring warm clothes. A good windbreaker and sweaters for night. If the wind picks up, which it does this time of year, it can be quite nippy.
Have a fabulous time!

Have that taxi driver stop by the ATM in Las Barriles. You are gonna need a lot of pesos for what I think is a lousy place-Rancho Leonero

Rancho Leonero

Can not comment on the quality of it, but the view is to die for. After two drinks each (3 of us) as we were leaving I asked our bankman what the frown was for, he said I did not want to know. He did not tell me, but he is a high roller and I was sure I didn't want to know.
Edit: one big thing, it is REMOTE. 10? km of wash board to town.

Forgot to answer the question.
Everything you need will be in Los Barriles except:
Real Hacienda tequila. You will have to go to San Lucas for that. It is at the big liquor store on right (local road) just before the divided road ends and you get to CSL.
Have a great time and don't catch all the fish. I will be there on the 21st April at Casa Royale.

If you want to go straight to the hotel, buy a bottle or two of tequila at the airport and worry about the rest mana?a. Then you can go to Los Barilles for lunch or dinner when you run out of tequila and buy some beer. And have a meal out side the hotel. The timing should be perfecto.

Need tequila. Go to San Jose. Ther is a store there with just tequila. Owner is the son of Jose Quevero. His house Tequila is great! Give it a try. He will let you sample it all. Dont drive after you leave. I know several people in the area and they love it. Stay away from CSL. It is bad news. Rancho Leanero is a very nice resort. Like the other guy said it is a little up there in price. I think it is well worth it.

He is also correct about Los Barriles. Everything you need will be in there.

You will have a blast!

went to dive cabo pulmo reef in 1990 staying at rancho leonero when Ireland had only 5 rooms, but grande ones!

the place is fantastic but today you'll pay thru the nose my friend, Los barriles and the van wormer resorts offer much more for the dollar and you can get stuff around town easily. We flew direct to Playa las palmas when you could still land on main street in los barrles (now closed) and a van picked us up for the crummy road drive to leonero.

if you're a diver the place is tops but now John caters to fishing mostly. They had a strip until Gilberto washed it away in 1988. too bad, i'd go again.

Why would you drive to San Jose to buy tequila. Head straight for the hotel after buying a couple of bottles at the airport. The trip to San Jose would take 45 min to an hour.(As will the one to Los Barilles)
I would prefer RL to Las Palmas just on the number of people. Although the Van Wormers have done a beautiful job of remodeling, to me it has lost some of its charm.
Dont listen to these naysayers, you will enjoy your time there!

More like a case a day...
Case a week only comes out to 3.8 beers a day...that's just getting primed.
24 hours in a day...24 beers in a case- Makes sense to me:?:

hey how about the lobster????

I have scheduled a week at Rancho Colorado in late April... then I can fairly compare the two sites.... But how about the lobster...????

Will take the suggestion and buy a little at/near the airport... then trek to the store later....

My personal consumption is to limit my intake to no more than 3-4 beers w/a good breakfast 4-5 for lunch and whatever it takes to get the dust out for happy hour... with some break for dinner and my cigars....

ANY input on the lobster question?????

Oh and Mike's right about the Pacific side for lobsters.....Have you looked at a map...that is not that far. We get some pretty fresh ones from Puerto San Carlos. Ask Gary to find you some lobsters. I am sure that he can. I would ask the price;D

Take 2 coolers with you to Rancho. Go into Los Barriles for beer & munchies. Stop at ice house just south of Pemix on hiway & fill up one cooler for 20 - 30 pesos. You need the coolers to take home your smoked fish anyway !

I like your plan. We very seldom travel without a cooler, no matter where we are going. You can pack all your breakables in them and then fill them with beer when you get there. PS-bring an extra plastic bag for all the contents, when you get to the beer store.
