Way Too Far Off Topic

My view of the Off Topic Forum has always been Enter-at-Your-Own-Risk. You don't have to spend much time there to realize that any Democrat who expresses an opinion is instantly attacked by a little pack of Republicans who apparently get their jollies from being rude. (Not being thin-skinned, I've traded insults with them from time to time.)

There are conservative Nomads--notably Braulio, Bernie, Dave and Roberto--who can express political disagreement with civility and reason, but the attack dogs prefer personal insults. Still, I've never thought their posts should be censored.

Then I tuned in to "Guaranteed To Turn A Conservative's Stomach," a thread entered by Grover on 3/2.

On this thread, PJC posted some "photos" of Hillary Clinton
that are totally disgusting. I'm not very fond of Mrs. C., but that sort of gutter trashing on an open forum is beyond the bounds of common decency, no matter whom the victim may be.

I had assumed that PJC would have the good sense to delete this material when other Nomads objected. Instead, he replied, "This is way to [sic] predictable to see you liberal lefties whine about a picture of a partially nekid woman." This was followed up with a statement that liberals "support open sex acts in Gay Parades across the US . . ."

I'm not in favor of censoring PJC. I just think he should be permanently banned from posting on this board. This man is not Nomad material: his interest is not in Baja but in venting venom on anyone who doesn't share his political views.

Does anyone else agree?

Lera, I gave up on the off topic forum long ago... Nobody is going to change their views no matter how much logic or insults are traded...

Keep your sanity and come to Nomad for Baja, not for political bashing.

I was so happy when Doug made it so the ugly off topic posts stopped being displayed when we use 'Today's Posts'... Don't go there if you don't like what you see... You will be 'mas contento sin off topic'!

No insult intended, but why not take this post to the off-topic board and let the people that use it respond ? In order to respond to your post, one would have to have specifcally gone to off-topic and looked at the photo in question in order tell you that other than the political sensitivities, who cares !?

Sorry

Hmmmm...Why don't you ask our very own website Man..namely Doug?If you think it is way out of line, just report it? I, personally, don't have the want ,need or time to read most of the the babble there, no offense Lera!Have gone there a few times, and it seems to me to be a boxing match, sumo arena, divorce court, supreme court of any one persons making......I guess that is why it is suppressed from the "todays posts".Just so we "don't have to go there" if we don't want to!

I'm only replying

to my impressions of Doug's management of the board.

He is extremely democratic, in the best sense.

Lord, I can't even imagine what grief he puts up with to keep this an open forum, but, cheers.

Free speech is s precious gift and kudos for Doug for protecting it.

My sincere and best advice is, if you don't like what you see on a forum, don't call for censorship, just go someplace else that doesn't offend you so much.

Lera
The only choice is to ignore them. They wont go away but at least they wont get you riled up.
Come and join the Kumbaya club, who stay away from off topic and run nekkid on the beach.
I do post the occasional joke(I noticed that you tried that too) over there but never read any of the political stuff.
Have a great day.

I enjoy off-topic talk, especially good debates, but no more on this board. I agree with lera. The report post button in off-topic does nothing. Personally, banning about 4 people (from both sides of the political debate) would do the trick and make the off-topic a legitimate debating spot and a place to enjoy off-topic discussion without being called every name in the book.

Lera

First thanks for the nice words---But I go there myself and I normally learn things that I would not be exposed to in other places. I do not agree with the silly name calling and am quite often turned off by it. I find that a shame because most of these guys ( didn?t include the gals because they seldom become involved the name calling) have a lot of knowledge to share?both from the right and the left. I often agree with some of the things that you say and feel that for that I am much more open minded and willing to consider others opinions.

I am quite often amazed at how these people can marshal their thoughts and their ability to call up facts (and some not so factual facts) and links to information I would have never reviewed without their input.

I do believe that BB often hurts his strongly held views by trashing others ( I just do not understand what that accomplishes) when logic just might change someone?s own views. No, not those directly involved, but the lurkers can pick and choose and come away a little wiser from the visit.

?Canned replies and rebuttals? are obvious and are easy to tune out.

Truth be known I get turned off by some things said by others on this forum (the only exception I can think of is the recipe section) and I?m sure that I have angered others at times.

I believe what Doug is doing is more than adequate.

Free speech seems to be less and less free in our general society. Let?s work to keep it on the Nomad Board.

My recollection and select archives do not show where you've reported any particular post in that area. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I do have other commentary from you on the off-topic areas, but no report of a specific post.

Folks, I'm happy to review anything you report. If it's something in the off-topic area, it should (please) be a significant issue.

btw... sending a report via the board is more efficient than sending me an email to have a particular post reviewed.

Thanks,
--
Doug

I have only recently found myself "sucked into the vortex" of the off topic forum.

I have to claim that I have never used profanity or porn, and have tried to keep my arguments civil and defenceable. Today I failed. I had promised that I would no longer respond to the provocation of those few who only seem to slur people, and "copy and paste" their hate. Once a Marine always a Marine they say. I'm not much good at turning the other cheek.

Today I called names, and I apologize to the civil people on all the forums for that.

Bernie, again I agree with you. Skeet, we disagree very strongly on a lot of issues, but you're cool man. You are civil, if dogmatic, with your posts. That's all I ask.

Thanks again to Doug for the off-topic forum. It really cleaned up the Baja related areas where I still spend the vast majority of my very enjoyable time.

It was over a month ago right about the time I decided to end all dealings in off-topic, so I do not recall the exact post, sorry.

How about you have someone moderate the off-topic? Not subjects, just for personal attacks and adult content. This site needs neither.

Every time (all 2 of them) that I have used the report button, the offensive material was removed. Once a picture and another time a word.

Use that and see if it doesnt work for you too.

my reaction to the photo is much the same as you describe. but skeet's posted response to it was enough to remind me that even the worst of the worst can elicit something good. one of the few times i agreed with something he said;D

my vote is not to censor, but to keep the level of dialog as high as we can
