CAUTION !! New fence in Baja

CAUTION!! New fence in Baja

EL CRUCERO AREA
I just recieved info that there is a new fence across the old race course
0.8 tenths of a mile south of El Crucero.( the old rusted car body)
I am told you have to go out to the highway about 2 miles to get past it.
Use caution in this area till you check it out.

Corky, are you talking about the dirt road that parallels the highway (just east of it) used by SCORE for races?

Any chance of getting a little more specific on the area? Like Baja or Baja Sur, located a certain direction and miles from a city on the map?

I think its the bpart of the race course on the east side of the highway that runs S/E towards BOLA road.

Wornout,

OK, got it now, thanks. When you mention old race course and highway, I was thinking San Felipe area, since the SF 250 was last weekend, and thehighway was either 3 or 5. Now, I see you are talking about south of Chapala and east of Highway 1. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yes, El Crucero was the name of a ranch at the southern end of the original gulf route where it met the transpeninsular road.

That ranch is gone, but the new highway is right next to the old road and is the point where it hugs a hill and turns (bends) south heading for Punta Prieta (and the L.A. Bay junction).

Score or someone since the highway was built made a parallel dirt road between El Crucero and the old L.A. Bay road... just a half mile east of the highway. This is not the original Baja main road, which is mostly west of the highway a quarter mile.

You can see all these roads on the Google satellite images as this is a high resolution area of Baja... I made links to them on that thread of Baja from Space.

its there. about 1/2 a mile south of the station wagon at the highway. not to hard to get around... just odd. Maybe the rancher didnt think he got fair treatment for the last 1000 that passed through.

I brought up the Baja Locations from Space thread... also, here is El Crucero:

El Crucero from Space

You can see the parallel Baja 1000 road as it begins there ans use your mouse to follow it south to the old L.A. Bay road...

David by zooming in I can see the trail north of the LA Bay turn off that Lou pulled up on his PC. When I was down there looking for it I drove to the LA Bay turn off got gas and drove back and I never did see the trail. I have a better ideal where it is now. Looks to be about 4 miles north of the LA Bay turn off. Also there's another jct about 1500 feet north with cross trails for a ref.

Yes TW... that is the road that goes to the Pacific via San Antonio/ Codornices not on any map... 4baja took it and told me that it existed before I searched for it with the satellite!

It is just south of the old L.A. Bay road crossing Hwy. 1 (and where the newer road goes northeast to Rancho San Luis on the edge of Arroyo Salsipuedes).

Thanks for the news Corky. That's a bummer. I just drove that trail in my Toyota Tacoma a few months ago. On a similar note, I drove up Yubay wash north of the LA bay road (also part of the race course) to the junction near El Desengano. Just prior with the junction to main route (dirt road) to El Desengano, there is a big steel gate that is locked so you cannot get through. Luckily, the property owner happened to show up just as we arrived on the "wrong side" of that gate, and they let us through. Out of respect for the ranch/prop. owner, I would advise against using the route up Yubay wash from the highway. Anyway, the road from Desengano eventually meets up with the route along Mex 1 that you describe, ending at El Crucero.

Here's a map I sketched showing some of the area in discussion...

The Baja 1000 road coming south from El Crucero joins the old L.A. Bay road at the top left... The old L.A. Bay road joins the new L.A. Bay road at the base of that climb up, out of Arroyo de Yubay... That is the point 4baja mentioned.

Is there any word on the status of this fence? Confirmation that it is there?

Thanks

If it is locked, then go north 6.5 mi. to the Calamajue cut off, built in '73 to access the Calamajue canyon for water during the construction of Mexico 1... It joins the highway at the top of a rise... easy to see northbound, a km. north of the road to the Pacific via San Antonio.
