Camping at the Bay of LA Islands
Has anyone ever camped at La Ventana or Smith or any other of the local Islands at LA Bay? If so which is the best to stay at and is the fishing good
from shore?
Ahh Baja.... Where you can hear yourself think & commingling with the locals will humble you.

Alex, if you do camp on an island try not to kill any rattlesnakes, no matter how affraid you are... 
Read the thread with Graham's letters from his recent campout or being 'marooned' for two months on Isla Angel de la Guarda.

When I visited Isla La Ventana in 03/2005 our permits were checked. They are like 2 bucks, so no biggies, but if you don't have one there are fines.
The guy checking permits had credentials, uniform, marked boat and everything. First time I've been checked for anything like that in Baja. We
didn't fish off the shore, but did catch a lot of ling cod between Isla La Ventana and the mainland. When the tide is out there are a few very large
pools that you can snorkel and check out, lots of rays and jellies stuck there.

I camped on Ventana and Smith. There is a designated camping spot on each - a sign posted in the area. These are probably the best spots anyway -
sheltered with a nice view. There is a sign coming into town which says that you need a permit to go onto the islands. I believe that means hiking
too, but not sure about that. I snorkled and fish and didn't see much in the way of fish. Even an osprey on Ventana had a hard time finding small
fry for her chicks - just nothing left. You can find a few spots in the rocks around the islands, fishing from your boat, but not off a beach. Need
a license to fish from a boat, however. Might I suggest that you pick up some trash and broken glass in the camping area and dispose of it - would be
a good thing.

I knew someone would understand my feelings as Stupid as they may seem to be. Thanks . I am hurt by the remarks... I feel it is stupid to go to Baja and not fish
but hey to each his own and my thing is exploring just like some who likes to drive way in the middle of nowhere just to get a suntan that they can
get in their back yard. Others like to collect shells for crying out loud and I like going places where there is rattle snakes & fish YEAHH Love this forum, I can feel the LOVE .. Free will, WOW. God is great isn't he..

Great stuff guys,
We all love to do stuff that at times is weird but what the heck, coming on this board is weird to many our there. You know a bunch of folks all
wound up about a piece of land with no water, rattle snakes, a bunch of smelly fish, catus, at many times no showers, tacos that come from ?, a two
lane highway dangerous as heck, an so on and so on. But we love it and that is all that matters. The desires of the heart are fulfilled here for
many of us and truly it is a great blessing to have not just the freedom in the good old USA but to be able to travel pretty much trouble free into
what seems to be an even free-er (my own word here) Baja which , I believe to a certain degree is just an extention of America anyway. I truly
appreciate the Q & A section here as there is always someone willing to give it a shot, even if it is to get something started. That's awsome

Humfrevilles, 'Home Depot', etc. when you and Juan (?) came over with that wonderful dish!

Ok, not to get picky here - but, isn't a culebra a non-poisonous snake? A rattlesnake is a vibora, right? Vibora cascabel to be precise - "rattle

My view of pickiness, Roberto, is that it's a great way to share knowledge, and your explanation makes sense. The Mexican who skinned the snake called
it culebra but had no wild-life expertise, and I suspect that common names may vary from place to place.

I and a couple of buds of mine camped on smith for two days near that lagoon,neat spot,a little creek would run back an forth to the lagoon depending
on the tide,we had a great time,no signs back in those days.
caught a couple tink yellows for breakfast.

Any rattler thats invades my living space is terminated immediately

I have camped on Isla Smith (Isla Coronado)----
----but not since the mid-1970's. We camped at what we called the "isthmus" near the south end, approachable from the east via open water and a nice
beach, and from the west thru a very narrow opening thru the rocks and into a wonderful lagoon. We always had our Gregor 14' Alum. and did most
fishing from that, but yes, there were fish available from the shore if the wind was not blowing. Have not fished around Smith for several years,
tho, and it may not be the same anymore.
We never actually camped on Ventana, but the fishing was excellent, back then.
