Mexican state power company Comisi?n Federal de Electridad (CFE) has contracted local consortium Techint-Isolux de M?xico-Elina to build, install and manage a new fibre-optic network in the north of the country, according to BNamericas quoting the company. The consortium will replace 2,664km of transmission line ground wire with fibre-optic cable in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Le?n, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tamaulipas. The MXP490 million (USD46 million) contract also includes the supply, installation and activation of optical equipment and electronic peripheral equipment for 36 optic links.

REPLACING the ground wire with fiber? Interesting.

I've seen power companies in the states put fiber along their transmission lines for their internal control communications; it's great because you can hang it around all those high energy fields without worrying about signal interference. Now I wonder if CFE is thinking far enough ahead on this to consider selling some of that bandwidth outside of the company for the good of the patria... our old friend Carlitos (Slim) could use some competition about now...
