Mexican Auto Insurance
I am preparing to make a trip, via my truck, down Baja and was wanting to get some opinions on which auto insurance companys are reputable and which
to avoid.

Do a search on the forum for "car insurance" - it's been widely discussed. If you are an AAA member (not insured by, just a member) call them. If
there is a lien on your car you need the written authorization of the lienholder to take it across the border (required by the insurance company and
they'll usually take care of it for you). If you're a member of the Baja Travel Club (www.bajaadventure.com) contact them. Or, do the search on the forum and see what the "reviews" are - most Nomads suggest how/where to buy it.

Funny you didn't mention BajaBound.com as the great daily insurance company... I used them often (print the policy at home, no stopping at border)
when I didn't have an annual policy. They use GE.

We use Lewis & Lewis - have for years. Can't comment on the service because we've never had a claim with them.

I am an agent and the Qualitas policy sold by Lewis and Lewis is the best all around coverage for the dollar available.
I did have a claim this year and decided to have the truck repaired in the United States because I did not really want Bondo and Mexican paint on a
newer truck. They said fine, they would do an appraisal in Ensenada at the office and would then send me a check, minus deductible, for the amount.
That is great, but I truly think the amount was way below what I could have gotten the repair done in Mexico. The US repair was $3,300 and their
Mexican appraisal was for 859.00 US. So next time I will get several actual appraisals in Mexico to make sure that everything is OK and then I can
either do the repair in the US or in Mexico.
Since we live in Santa Rosalia, it is very inconvenient to have things repaired in Ensenada and most of the work I have seen in Santa Rosalia is
less than I would accept.
But with all that said, Jim Lewis did answer and assist by e-mail and the dealings with Qualitas in Mexico was very good. So overall I am happy,
just think I got taken a little but maybe this post will help others with the same problem.

I'd used Lewis and Lewis for years but got a better deal for better coverage this year from Discover Baja. Haven't ever made a claim on any of them,
though.
Lewis and Lewis is always tough to get ahold of by phone. Discover always answers theirs.
