Driving on the beach from Puertocitos to San Felipe?

Hello everybody,

I am planning a hiking trip to Matomi Peak this weekend, and on the way back would be interested in taking a beach drive back instead of the paved road. Whenever I camp out at one of the beaches I see people traveling that way, and was wondering where to enter, leave and is it passable. I am planning to drop tire pressure to 18-20psi, and see how things go. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

We do it all the time on M/C?s You have to go in land at Santa Maria to Percubu And some times a little north of there. This assumes you are going at low tide
Get off by the Light House so you don?t Get the S/F Beach residents mad

Driving on Beach from Puerticitos to SF

Yes, we do too in our buggies, but please take it easy. It's getting a little busy at this time of year and there's lots of little kids out there, not paying attention to racers on the beach, especially in late afternoon. If you make a right, on the highway when you come out of the Matomi and drive to Ceasar's Camp, on the left side of the road, you can get the best Tacos ever at Maria's. Anyone there can tell you where you can get back on the beach, south of Maria's and head back up to Santa Maria.

I have a great web site on climbing Matomi Mountain from Baja Nomad 'Mexitron' (who doesn't post much anymore :-( ...) with a link to an old article ... followed by a photos of climbing nearby Mesa Avion and hiking up Matomi canyon beyond the ranch.

As for driving from San Felipe to Puertecitos... did that in '77 in my Subaru 4WD wagon... The sand south of Coloradito becomes gravel and is much harder to drive on. Low tide is a must as there are some rocky points. As said above, you need to detour around the lagoon system between Percebu and Bahia Santa Maria ... this is what creates Shell Island at high tide...

Please report how you do... In '77 most of the coast was desolate, now it is almost all solid beach homes.

THank to all for the great responses, and I think I have a pretty good handle now on the beach drive. I will update everybody on the hike and beach drive once I am back in SD. Hasta pronto.
