computers
I was told that I can take my computer etc. to baja without declaring it. Any truth to that?

I have brought 4 down here and never have had any problems. I drag the laptop back and fourth all the time as well..

You can bring a laptop duty free. A desktop is subject to duty, if they chose.

I was once told by Mex. customs when I had a empty computer case in my car theat I could not bring it in even paying duty. (He thought it was a
complete computer) I said I would leave it on the sidewalk by the check point and he saw nothing inside and let me bring it.

HUH ?
IF you had a previous customs duty form on you, you could have pointed out the portion on the back of that slip that says you can import up to $4000
worth of computer equipment simply by paying the duty on it.

I heard from a friend recently that he was told in TJ he could not bring in a used computer but a new one was OK (as long as he paid duty on it).
After some haggling, he asked what it would take to turn a used computer into a new one. A price was agreed upon and the duty paid.

I actually will have several used computers to declare on my Menaje de Casa, when I move--so why can't you bring in used computers??? I am in the
Computer training business, so I have several computers--I'm not about to give them up, and I can't say they're new....

Multiple Computers
As I mentioned earlier, the problem with multiples of anything is the concern on their part that you are bringing the equipment down to sell. They
don't seem to relate well to we Gringos that have a TV (or computer) in EVERY room.
BTW, I surely would not mention that you are in "the computer training" business. That would probably confirm their worst doubts. For that matter,
my question would be "WHY" you would want a lot of used computers in Baja unless you were planning to do some sort of business. Consider a donation.
At one time, I probably had more used computers than anyone else I've met. In excess of 30 CPUs, monitors, monitors, printers and cases of
peripherals, cables,etc.
The best of those I gave away to someone who renovates used computers for donation to schools. The rest I threw in the dumpster except for a "few" I
still have in the U.S. for parts. Usually, I don't even use the stuff I kept since technology changes so fast. I just ordered a 10/100 router (for
20 bucks) for a friend even though I've got a bunch of used ones. The one thing I did bring down here were a few cartons of cables since I always
seem to start a job missing the one cable I need.
