Goodbye Camp Gecko
After 30 years Doc has decided to lease out virtually all of Camp Gecko. He will retain a couple beach front spots as rentals but the rest of the
camp will be torn down. Abraham says he is tired and wants to retire...

More power to him. He is a wonderful guy who added much to my Baja experience. I was dazzled by his knowledge and sensitivity about the marine life
in the Bay. I hope he has a rich and relaxing retirement. Un gran abrazo para Doc Abraham.

If I had to pick another camp in Bahia than Gecko and I wasn't fully self-contained I would pick Archelon.

It's at the former government RV park of the mid 1970's, next to the Turtle Research facility... ie the first camp north of town... where the La
Gringa oiled road makes a sharp left/north, continue to go straight east.

Thanks soulpatch, I didn't realize it was that far from the turtle place! Need to check out the north campos better, now that Gecko is no longer a
campground. Have only camped north of town at La Gringa and Raquel & Larry's before.

There are several reasons why he has chosen to retire.
Some time ago he and his wife his wife, Sylvia, purchased a home in TJ. Over a year ago Sylvia moved back to TJ with their two small lovely
daughters.
The move was necessitated in order to obtain a quality education for the children which was not possible in BOLA.
The Doc was becomming more and more disinchanted with running a remote tourist camp and not contributing to the betterment of mankind using his
medical degree which he worked so hard to obtain.
For some time he has been in depressed state; he had been combating a life threating disease, he missed his wife and children and the culture and
excitement of a larger metro area that TJ provides.
And the timing was right and timing is every thing...

The end of Camp Gecko as we know it is the passing of a very fun era. Before my first visit to Camp Gecko, I'd sometimes camp at the end of a beach
crowded with a long line of private cabins. I'd sometimes fantasize about what it would feel like to possess such a thing. I feel that our renting of
Doc's cabins, especially the orange #6 cabin, gave us brief glimpses into the experience of the cabin lifestyle. The whole camp was special. I liked
the camp atmosphere, new friends, Doc's laid back manner, the low price for a water front cabin, the lack of stress by knowing that a cabin was
reserved for us, the hot showers, and everything else. The one thing I think that prevented it from being the ideal place is the rocks at low tide. No
fear of stingrays I guess. Again, I think it was Doc that made the place special. He cared about the place and kept it clean and all that, yet he
didn't run the place with an iron fist. We will miss our opportunity to feel so at home in our (everybody's) little cabin.

Doc told me that the #6 cabin is staying put and will be available as a rental - He is planning to build a real nice rental at the North end by Beach
Bob's place. Bottom line is Doc wants to have everything leased out but plans on retaining 2 upscale rentals at each end of his beachfront.

Everything but the life threating (sic) disease was known and already mentioned here on Nomad, but thanks just the same.
I agree with Packoderm's sentiments... but we do need a new place to hook up in Bahia as two cabins isn't enough for Nomads on holiday!
