Haliotis- Ensenada

This is a venerable institution in Ensenada, located on the street to Ojos Negros, just two blocks East of Gigante.
We had lunch there on election Sunday.
It was just so-so, nothing like what I remember from years ago.
All the clientele looked local, not the usual tourist crowd in Ensenada.
My fish was fresh, but breaded almost to resemble a fish stick. There was a very interesting clam concoction, some green salad and that was it.
Price was on the up-side for Ensenada, nearly $20 each, including one beer. (served on election day no less)
Also, in broad daylight it is a bit on the musty side, needs a good airing and fresh paint.
Kind of disappointing compared to years past.

I was there about two years ago

and came away with the same conclusions. It seemed better in the late 80s and 90s when I used to go there almost every trip down.

I also think it's overpriced now.

Kinda sounds like Haliotis has a case of halitosis. :wow::barf:

We've always enjoyed our meals there. Very much a well-heeled local crowd, business folks. The best thing to order is what the restaurant is named for - abalone -but only when it's in season, otherwise it comes from a can. But they tell you that when you order. It is on the spendy side but if you want to get away from the tourists it's a nice place to go. Great stained glass scenes throughout the restaurant.

haliotis

used to be one of our favorites, but the smokiness of the place finally turned us off. i have unfortunately (living in mexico) developed an allergy to cigarette smoke that results in sinusitis when exposed. haliotis naturally permits smoking, but has no ventilation at all.

Wow, I guess we've been lucky when we've gone in there - there's never been anyone smoking!!! Sylens, have you been to Cafe Jalisco in Maneadero? NO SMOKING ALLOWED and the food is great!

Lili, Cafe Jalisco is in Maneadero well past the turn off to La Bufadora. Go past the 2nd light, maybe 3-4 blocks, on the right hand side (heading south, of course!). Mexico food with a special comida del dia. Wednesday it's Cocido de Res, Fridays it's Camarones Ranchero (but it's a soup) and Albodigas de Pescado (yummy!). Very casual place - open for Breakfast around 7 and they close about 5:30. Maybe we should start a new topic: Non Smoking Restaurants in Baja????

why don't you do a separate report on your restaurant, if it is so good,
and not muck up this thread???
just curious.
