Erindera ? Baseball, Carnitas and Surfing ? July 14-16

I visited Erindera for the first time over the weekend and had a really nice experience. A group of four of us met up early on Friday and packed my van with all the gear for the weekend. The drive down took about four hours and was beautiful. We made the requisite stop at El Palomar in Santo Tomas for some supplies and a quick stretch. 78 kilometers south of Ensenada we made the turnoff for Erindera. The 24 kilometer road in from Highway 1 was pretty well maintained save for a couple of big potholes along the way. Not a bad drive at all.

We had been invited down to Erindera by my friend Greg who has a house there that was completed about six months ago. He is the manager of ?Los Monos? a fast pitch baseball team here in San Diego and was able to organize a game on Saturday against the Erindera baseball team. They absolutely destroyed the Monos with a final score of 8-1! The game brought a group of people down from San Diego who were able to collect some used baseball gear to donate to the Erindera little league team. Needless to say the kids were ecstatic about it!

While we were watching the game a Carnitas feast was being prepared by Marta, a close neighbor of Greg?s. They had killed a pig that morning and worked all day to get the food ready. After the game the team and guests ate fresh tortillas, carnitas, beans, rice and two different types of salsa that made all of us sweat profusely. Luckily there was ice cold beer to wash it all down. The day ended with an amazing sunset over the water and good conversation around the bonfire. It was a pretty magical day.

The surf over the weekend was everything from mixed up slop to beautiful, groomed and peaky beach break. After we rolled into town on Friday we headed north up to Punta Cabra to check the surf there and managed to get the van stuck in the sand. I guess it would not be a Baja trip without getting stuck! We dug out the tire and were able to get towed out by a friend?s truck and some rope donated from the locals on the beach. We shared a beer after our ordeal and were hot, sandy and ready go get in the water! The surf was shoulder high and fun but definitely getting affected by the wind. On Saturday before the game we went to the beach break just south of Erindera. It was overhead on the sets and had potential but was once again disorganized from the wind and the thunderstorm the night before. Sunday was absolutely great. We returned to the beach break just south of town and were happy to see clean and peaky surf with some size. The water was pretty warm too. I spent a little over two hours out in trunks and was thoroughly satisfied and exhausted by the time I got out of the water.

Leaving town that afternoon was especially hard as we wanted our little vacation to continue. Although there was a ton of traffic on the toll road and long lines at the toll booths we managed to get across the border in 45 minutes?.and enjoyed some spicy and buttery elotes while we waited. It was a great weekend. I?ll post some photos as soon as I sort through them.

I was really surprised too. The water was probably around 68-70 degrees. It was pretty cold when you first got in but after that it was fine. Plus I was doing a lot of paddling and not a whole lot of sitting in the water which helped. I remember surfing a few clicks north of Erindera about 10 years ago and the water was absolutely freezing....maybe I just got lucky this time around.
