Nuevo Mazatlan Weekend (8-12-06)
We like to go to the upper Sea of Cortez at least once in August and wanted to camp on Shell Island with friends Steve and Val ('Hotschott' on Nomad).
My wonderful girlfriend Elizabeth ('Baja Angel') and my daughter Sarah were with me.
We got out of town on Friday afternoon and headed for Tijuana to pick up an order of 'got baja?' hats that I recently began to sell after getting many
requests... Antonio Mu?oz ('BajaCactus') made the design when he printed the bumper stickers I requested, so the hat would match that 'logo'.
The hats were waiting for me in Tijuana, then we were off for Ensenada and on to San Felipe!
In Ensenada, we stopped for dinner at a taco stand. The mariachi band added more wonderful atmosphere...

We arrived at Km. 26, south of San Felipe about 10:30pm Friday night (the access road to Shell Island) to find Hotschott waiting there for us...
already with lots of mud on his Chevy truck...
It seems that the tide was so high, Shell Island was actually a total island (usually one can drive onto it at one spot along its four mile length).
Backup camping site would be Nuevo Mazatlan at Km. 32, about 4 miles away.
That turned out to be a great choice as the hundreds of shade trees make desert camping very nice.
The beach is great too!
My Cooper Discoverer STT tires did very well (this time) and I was able to drive over the dry sand onto the wet and along the coast without letting
any air out!
Here is my quick set up sun shade on the beach at Nuevo Mazatlan...

We drove up the beach to Bahia Santa Maria... Here is Baja Rob's beautiful home... Notice the very high tide came closer than usual to these houses.

The high tide came TOO CLOSE to this home!
This was between Baja Rob's and Nuevo Mazatlan, where the dynamic shoreline has been encroaching on a few homes built on the sand, a bit too close to
the sea... very sad.

Back at Nuevo Mazatlan, the incoming tide permitted some fine bathing and fun without needing to walk a great distance to get wet... at low tide the
water is really 'out there'!

Just north of the campground (see trees in background), is a coyote spring... The founder of Nuevo Mazatlan, Luis Castellanos Moreno used to get his
drinking water here...

Note the wet sand... coyotes dig to get a drink... water trickles into the hole made.

Here's Hotschott at the old well of Agua de Chale. The current owner of Nuevo Mazatlan (Javier) added the bricks and sealed the top, for safety...

The new toll road that keeps you out of Mexicali if you are traveling between Tecate and San Felipe.
This is looking south on Hwy. 5, about 13 miles south of the border/ 113 miles north of San Felipe.
You go past the new road's bridge, then make a U turn to get on it if you are coming north from San Felipe...
