more death
reported this morning in the news. a mexican couple stuck on the side of the road on the toll road just north of ensenada at dawn yesterday was
accosted. husband killed. hard to know what to think. vehicle was described as dark sedan. different perps? or just different vehicle?

Sylens. Any way to determine if this was another night time happening?
Suddenly going through Tecate & Cocoa's corner to Hwy 1 & then south to Loreto is beginning to appear to be a safe alternative. Plus more
scenic for sure. Did that once. Cost me two ten ply tires going up one of the very steep grades. Didn't end up flat, but did have to replace them
when I got home. (wasn't aware that they got cut on those razor edge rocks until I got home in Oregon) Anyone experienced that difficulty recently on
that road? Certainly one heck of an experience.

According to El Vigia, the couple pulled over at km. 78 north of Ensenada before dawn to get some sleep in their car. A few hours later, they were set
upon by robbers, and the husband, aged 48, resisted the robbery attempt and was killed. These are sad times in Baja, for all of us who live here.

Added Concerns
It certainly adds a new dimension to concerns over breaking down on the highway and, to a lesser extent, stopping to help others who have broken down
or picking up hitchhikers. At least when it is your decision, you can make the judgement based upon imagined danger. If you're the one broken down,
you're totally at their mercy. I, for one, would certainly welcome an opportunity to be able to carry a handgun legally, whatever the cost or hassle
involved.
It has been my practice for 30 years now never to pass up a Mexican broken down unless there was already someone else there and I've always picked up
anybody hitchhiking, including my last trip North earlier this month. Some of my best (and most rewarding) Baja stories involve stopping at breakdowns
and picking up Mexican Hitchhikers. Although I don't plan to change that, I will pay more attention to the situation before stopping.

a mexican acquaintance from ensenada has recommended that we don't travel for a few months. he says this trouble towards americans is due to the
border fence fiasco; new fence, national guard. my friends will heed his advice and not travel with us in september.
brother left for the weekend before getting this message, but travelled with companions, so a 2 car caravan.
seems from sylens report though that it doesn't matter who you are.

as mentioned, latest incident occurred to mexicans. and remember, at least one involved perps who spoke english well. very likely cholos from el
otro lado who came down to play and couldn't resist a little nastiness prior to heading north.
border fence has stirred up feelings, but the acts we're talking about don't fit the revenge bill, imho.

Don't know what to think right now, drove down two weeks ago to take a fifth wheel to our casa in BOLA, did all the wrong things it seems, left at
night, slept in the camper by the side of the road in San Quintin/Los Pinos, but the thing that just kicks me in the nuts is the fact that we have a
place 4 lots along from Racquel and Larry's, and was thinking of stopping by on a walk down the beach, but never did.

no idea about identity/ethnicity of perps. but i seriously doubt plates were from north of the border. that, i suspect, would have been mentioned in
the article.
