802.11b/g BAJA Communications
This is probably only tangental to Baja itself, but it does involve my activities in Baja.
Has anyone found any GOOD deals on external antennas / access points for an 802.11b/g network ? In my case, The problem is that I have my Broadband
Modem and wireless router located in a metal travel trailer and my casa itself also started out in life as a metal travel trailer, a double whammy of
Farraday. Using my present equipment, I can get a useable, but not outstanding signal 60 feet away on the patio, but once I go inside, it's gone. I
worked around this by simply running another 100 feet of Cat 5e into the secondary locale, but now I have a neighbor who has asked about using my net.
However, he's about 250 feet away. No Signal.
Most of the external/Weatherproof equipment I've seen is pretty pricey. Any ideas ? I already thought about trenching another 250 feet of Cat 5e.
I'd rather not.

I have some Hawking antennas that are 8dbi and 2.4g. I will have to get the model tomorrow. I have them going about 1/2 a mile, they have worked
great for about 6 months. Look at Outpost.com and Newegg.com for the best deals on Hawking. They require hard wire from the antenna to an access
point then you can go wireless if you want. I have about $400 into mine with antennas, cables, switches, router and AP's.

I am using a Linksys wrt54g with one of the two antennas connected via a pigtail and then lmr400 coax to an omni antenna on my roof and am projecting
signal about 2 miles to serve several people in the village where i live.
The omni antenna came from FAB-COR (check on the net). Been using this satisfactorily for about 7 years now.
Good luck with it.

FOr this type of thing, GOOGLE is your friend. I have seen them that can transmit the signal up to half a mile, and cost less than 200$. Just remember
that telnor does not like sharing, and they will fine you, and take your service, if you do.
So becareful with that.
Up here in the north end of Baja we have an awesome company that provides us with our connection. And its Not TELNOR. we have a company called WLCOM
they use and FM signal to send the packets of info. I have the minunum 512, and usualy and pulling closer to 1.1 or 1.2 megs.
He does not mind of we share. But for now, he does not go as far south as most of you are.
Have a Baja Day

Shared Service
My current Broadband is via DirecWay (HughesNet now). The only people I would consider allowing access are casual users who are mostly interested in
being able to download e-mail (without going to San Felipe) and do infrequent searches. My own usage is not that high since I rarely download data,
graphics or music files. If I were to ever get nailed by the FAP, I could easily disconnect that user.

HELP
I have a WRE54G Linksys range extender that I bought a couple of years ago. Tried to install it myself without luck. Had the head computer guy at
Loreto Bay try and he didn't do any better. Then, one of the 2 PC techs in Loreto gave it a try also without luck. My desktop is an E Machine T2080
with a AMD Athlon 2000+ processor. My access point is a Linksys-G, and even with the larger antennae can't get any range beyond one wall.
Advice anybody ??

Ok First off. Do the test as suggested, by walking away with a portable machine, and see how far you get, before you lose the signal.
You will have to set them up as inline from one to the outher. If you google inline routing, you should find some help.
