Cataract Surgery
Anyone know of a good surgeon that does this type of surgery ..Can go from Santa Rosalia to La Paz. Wife can't help me drive anymore.

We have a Dr. Letuchuga here in La Paz and there is a laser Clinic I understand is his son he probably does them also.

I'd heard that Dr. Lechuga was the best in La Paz...but...I went in thinking I needed distance glasses & he said my sight was fine, just stop
driving at night if I can't see anymore! About 6 mo. later, I went to a optometrist & he told me glasses were no longer an option & referred
me to a specialist who did what, in hindsight (pun!), felt like a 2-hour exam & told me I have cataracts & the only thing that will help my
vision is cataract surgery. So 3 docs examined me....Lechuga was the only one who didn't utter the word cataract! Based on this experience, my faith
in Lechuga has faded! I'll have to do some digging (I just moved & for some strange reason...things aren't where I think they should be!) to come
up with the name of the specialist I went to & really like & felt confident with. I have heard about the laser clinic here, but haven't yet
checked it out...so how about you check it out roundtuit & if it's a success, then I'll go! If it's not too successful, then
I'll chip in on a little white cup & cane for you. Maybe Shari could start training some of those extra dogs she's got as seeing eye dogs! And
you'd get a lobster dinner out of it as well!

its for mrs roundtuit. they wont give me a prescription for glasses as the number is too far off from the left eye. ron cant have a c-cktail as i
cant helprive anymore as i cant see worth a you know what. i want to have the sugery next month but dont know the cost. does anyone know the cost?
also does anyone know if somebody does it in loreto? any help will be appreciated but if not i will beg for margaritas and then i wont know i cant
see.

thanks i would appreciate all the help can get. im tired of not being able to see and it is 3000.00 a eye here in the states. without insurance
that is not a option for us old folks. thanks again. i will owe you a drink. we will be at poseda by next monday but our e- mail system wont be up
and runing for a few days. dorado seems like first on the list next elect. and then e-mail in that order. iguess we women know where we are on the
list. fishing comes first.

Tuit-
Do you have Medicare? Cataract extraction is the most common surgery that Medicare pays for. They won't cover all of the newer high tech lenses (that
can eliminate the need for glasses), but it sounds like you'd be happy just to have the fog lifted by getting the cataract out and a conventional lens
implanted.
Whether you decide to have the surgery in Mexico or the US, research the surgeons and talk to other cataract patients for their experiences. The
surgery is so common, that it can be erroneously thought of as "routine". The success ( and your sight) is greatly dependent upon the skill,
experience, and conscientiousness of your surgeon.
The instrumentation used in cataract surgery is constantly being updated and it's a hot technology niche which results in better outcomes for
patients. But your surgeon and the surgical facility have to be up to date for you to reap the benefit.
A cataract occurs when your eye's natural lens becomes hardened or cloudy/opaque. Most often it's a result of aging, but can be result of trauma,
diseases like diabetes, medications such as prednisone, or it can just be congenital.
The most common procedure used for cataract surgery is called Phacoemulsification. This uses Ultrasonic waves via microsurgery to break up the
cataract.
Laser is NOT what you look for when shopping for a ophthalmic surgeon to perform your cataract surgery. Some experimentation is being done using laser
for cataract removal, but it is not the tried and true method at this point.
I'm a recovery room nurse at a busy surgery center. We do lots of stuff but the mainstays are Ortho and Cataracts, Cataracts, and more Cataracts.
Personally, I'd have dental work done in Mexico and maybe something like an appendectomy in a pinch, but I would not seek out a low budget alternative
for cataract surgery.
