Flare Gun
We hve carried Wasp Spray, it seems like pretty bad stuff, however, lots of times we have had the boat flare pistol, orange plastic job, 10 guage, on
the seat or very much in reach. Have never really displayed it at check points and so do not really know what the reaction would be by solders. We are
licensed to carry guns in Mexico as hunters and for target shooting, rifles, pistols and shotguns. We always have our several registration cards with
us, in fact if they are really going through the stuff in the rear of the truck, sometimes I just tell them I don't have a weapon today but usually do
and show the hunting card and the inspection is over. Has anyone had a bad time due to a flare gun at a check point?

2 yrears ago my brother brought his boat to sonora san carlos we asked the same question at the check points and the border and was told its ok but it
must be kept in the boat not in any other place

I carried one under the seat of my truck in the case and was asked at a check point about it. I told them it was for my boat in cabo and they said ok
and left it there. It doesn't mean that the next guy won't hassle you but I think if you have an awnser and don't look quilty they, most of the time
believe you. I carry the little tube type that you can hold in one hand in the glove box of my truck and have never had anyone say anything. If they
did I would say the same thing.

Flare Gun
I have never had a problem with either the 12 gauge orange plastic type which I keep near my first aid kit; or the hand held flare launcher tubes. I
also have a pilot survival type that uses 38 caliber pen flares....looks like a small felt marker. Has a pocket clip and can keep it in a shirt or
jacket.

A friend of ours was going through a check point and they found the orange box with the gun. They ask if they could fire one shot into the air. He
said yes...they did. They put it back in the box and off he went.

I sent this Email to Fred Hoctor after he had a column about guns in Mexico.
"In July 1999 while returning from San Lucas Cove we were stopped at the last federal inspection at one of the Ensenada toll booths, and they found
some spare flair gun shells in my boat. We had removed the flair gun because the Vagabundos said it was illegal and you could go straight to jail.
We almost got an extended vacation in Mexico. After being released to go on twice, and their calling their supervisors, we finally got to go.
If you are correct, someone forgot to tell the federalles. I am not
going to risk it this year."

I have had no problems.....and never had a boat with me....as I always keep the gun and flares in their original case and with a quite extensive first
aid kit.

Why is anyone carrying a flare gun in their vehicle, unless it's a carry over from a boat, for protection? Or am I reading this wrong.
What's the damage if you shoot someone, say, in the head?
Personally, I don't think you want to kill someone in Baja, especially a Mexican.
And I don't know how accurate those things are.
Question about hunting licenses?
Ever get questioned at a checkpoint and have to show a license?

Flare Guns
Regarding the 12-gauge Olin Flare guns, they are accurate enough at close range (25 feet or less) to hit someone center-mass. Although I've only
"practiced" against static targets with my out-dated flares here in Baja, I've read that they'll penetrate at close range. If that happens, the
burning will do the rest. You'll probably have a dead body to explain, though, and since they "appear" to be illegal unless on a boat, you'd probably
be in deep caca, regardless of whether it was self-defense.
Speaking of "Legal" firearms, on only one occasion did I find myself behind a Mexican traveller who had a pistol at an Army Checkpoint. He told the
Guard about it, got it out of the car along with the paperwork and the Guards spent about 10 minutes inspecting the pistol, the paperwork, his
vehicle, etc before letting him go on his way. I've always wondered how they treat the hunters.

Thanks for the great info, I feel much better and I had thought that a flare pistol does not fit into the class of firearms. Having extra flare shells
of the 12 guage type laying around in your car could have be problem as they look just like the very illegal shotgun shells, any ammunition found in a
vehicle without the required travel permits is the same as having a firearm, even one 22 shell. If you hunt in the USA, its very easy to have a round
or two tossed into the center console as you empty pockets after hunting. Be very careful when crossing into Mexico to search those areas of you
vehicle and remove ALL of them, they will arrest you!
Back to vehicle protection, after reading all and having some fireside discussions, we all agree Machette trumps all weapons except for a gun! Most of
the guns I have seen down here are very old and worn out, shells for them are probably at least 50 years old, and the gun has probably not been fired
for many years, and I can really run fast when scared! Machette sounds good! Another reason to not drive at night.

FLARE GUNS
well:
A. If you have to use it, then it's an emergency
B. If you miss, it's still quite a show on the receiving end
C. If you hit, by the time they put the fire out, (I wouldn't stick around to offer first aid advice) you could be in Alsaka

I think a flare gun should be used like it was designed......and it works perfect if you come up on an accident....you know the normal flare gun
emergency answer.....and yes sometimes the old thinking from the need to carry a conceled gun creeps in my head ....but to shoot a mexican with a
flare gun is a horrible thought....I just let my Staffordshire Terrier....80 lbs and sweet unless you want to bother me handle the situation which I
have found is even scarier then packing around a lethal weapon........and it is amazing how little I have ever been bothered at any check
points......In reality you just use your head and stay out of situations where your life is in danger.....hopefully.....mexicans are not nearly as
scary as I feel when I go to the US which is very sad to say. I like the Karma Idea a great deal...
