Went through there one month ago, absolutely beautiful scenery. A little curvy coming from Ensenada for a bit, but it straightens out pretty well after you gain some altitude. Have used this road many a time and must say the asphalt was in very good condition.

Great views coming off the mountain onto the desert plain of the gulf and the top of the mainland. Also, as you come into the desert, look south for a sweet side shot of Picacho del Diablo and its dry lagoon to the east.

No Bandido encounters.

Haven't had a bad trip yet....

Isn't that the spot where Humphry Bogart had that trouble with those guys with no badges?

Yeah, and if the Chupacabras don't get you La llorena might. Her ghost will be waiting for you at a crossroads...

Another reason, among many, to stay off the road at night.

Kasheydog, welcome to Nomad... don't mind us poking some fun at you! We hear a lot of the 'what about the banditos' stuff from people who never been to Baja... We consider it an inside joke, a way to keep those without a little sense of adventure from taking a chance on having a great time.

While there is crime in Mexico (and everywhere else in the world, including San Diego), it rarely touches those of us who go to the great outdoors found in Baja. The farther away from a city or paved road, the safer you are, and the friendlier the people you will meet.

Highway 3 is fine... a great drive. The first 20+ miles out of Ensenada are a bit slow and you get behind trucks crawling up the hills, but after Ojos Negros, it is clear sailing and beautiful country!

COOL PICTURE, THANKS DAVID. I HAVE YET TO MEET BERNIE, HOWEVER I'VE READ ALL OF HIS BOOKS. MY GIRLFRIEND KNOWS HIM THROUGH HER WORK. HE HAS RETIRED FROM THE SAME LINE OF WORK. I'VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT HIM, ALL OF WHICH IS GOOD. WE WANTED TO GO TO THAT BOOK SIGNING IN THE PICTURE LAST YEAR, BUT I HAD TO WORK. HOPE TO MEET HIM SOON. HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ME FINDING THIS SITE. HE GAVE US THE HEADS UP AND TOLD US ABOUT IT AND HAD SOME GOOD THINGS TO SAY ABOUT YOU TOO. MAYBE WE CAN ALL GET TOGETHER SOME DAY.

Took that road in 1999 and we spent more time on the gravel beside the road than on the 1 square inch of pavement left after hurricane? My wife reminded me of this god awful noise when we were pulled off checking to see if all trailer was still there. It started way off and went wwwppppoooppppoppoopoppopopthump mopopppp and then verysoon a hover semi trailer went by at about 70 miles an hour on a road that was virtually non existant.

Glad to here things are better.

I took that road about three weeks ago from San Felipe to Ensenada. There is a Pemex in Valley Trinidad and a place or two selling food but I would eat before I left just in case the restaurants are closed. There is new pavement on the Ensenada end for a couple of miles. The rest of the road is in great contidion.

On the good side it's a very beautiful drive. It's one of my favorites for scenery. If you drive Baja it's your average Baja mountain/valley highway. The one big caution is to drive it during the day and not at night. One reason is the open range animals and the other is this road is famous for it's drug traffic. Not alot of places to eat. If you drive it with friends or on a weekend you'll be fine. Be cautious of race weekends also as this is a popular road for chase vehicles and haulers.
