LIABILITY INSURANCE INCLUDED

AVIS say MX law requires car rental companies to include liability insurance in the daily rental price(the counter help may or may not be aware)... have had little success getting the same information from other rental companies... at $17/22 a day that is a BIG difference.. my AMEX has a program for liability and they charge... my MasterCard has the same program w/o charge... if you have any information about the other companies.... please share....

Liability ??

I rent cars frequently in the U.S. and have always understood that the Domestic LIABILITY coverage was included in the Rental rate and required by law with no option to decline. Since Mex Auto insurance is a separate issue (and more expensive), I can understand why they would insist on doing the same.

The supplemental coverages such as CDW, etc ARE covered by my Amex Card so I never accept those, but I wasn't aware that there is such a provision for Liability.

Mexican liability insurance (not for the car, but for damage you do others or their property) is, indeed, required by Mexican law. You cannot legally drive the car off the lot without. You can wave insurance on the vehicle itself, but not the Mexican liability.

The only question is whether the rental car company is going to include the cost of the 3rd party liability in the quote they give you (Avis is the only one I know of who does) or whether they are going to charge you an additional $7.00-$11.00 a day at the counter. As you compare rates, bear in mind that you WILL be buying the 3rd party liability; no agency will rent you the car and let you drive away without it. Factor that in when comparing with Avis, who, in my opinion, is more honest about what the true charges of renting the vehicle will be.
