EL CAMINO REAL, from space! (San Ignacio to Santa Gertrudis, west route)

The El Camino Real going north (west route) can be followed going northwest from Hwy. 1 from the first image...

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-1

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-2

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-3

El Camino Real enters a low resolution area here:

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-4

Back into high resolution, the mission trail continues north toward San Francisco de la Sierra, San Pablo and Santa Gertrudis:

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-5

Rugged terrain requires switchbacks...

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-6

The Jesuits built well... where ever possible their roads ran in very straight lines!

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-7

Here the trail drops off a ridge and turns west down a valley before heading north, again:

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-8

The Camino Real merges with another trail that heads down the mountain...

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-9

After following a canyon upstream for some distance, the Camino Real switchbacks up the mountainside here:

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-10

El Camino Real meets the 'new' road to San Francisco de la Sierra:

San Ignacio to Sta. Gertrudis (west route)-11

San Francisco de la Sierra

San Francisco (de la Sierra) was a mission visita and early site for the next mission north of San Ignacio that originally was going to be called 'Dolores del Norte'. The limited water supply may have been why the mission site was moved (and renamed) Santa Gertrudis.

A visita of Mision Santa Gertrudis was built near the mouth of San Pablo Canyon, downstream of San Francisco, on the Camino Real. It has been called 'Dolores del Norte' by some authors and map makers, adding to the confusion!

TO BE CONTINUED!!!

San Francisco de la Sierra to the NORTH

I am starting the number over from San Francisco to Santa Gertrudis (ECR 1-11).

Here is the Jesuit road heading to the drop off into San Pablo Canyon: West ECR-1

Switchback down: West ECR-2

After merging with a modern trail/ road near Rancho San Pablo, the El Camino Real heads north, northwest to clear the mountains for the section to Santa Gertrudis: ECR-3

Here it is faintly, heading northeast: ECR-4

ECR-5

Before disappearing into the vast arroyos of Buenos Aires and La Prosperidad (just east of Guillermo Prieto:
ECR-6

ECR-7

ECR-8

ECR-9

ECR-10

Fork in the western Camino Real, on the mesa just above (sw) of Mision Santa Gertrudis. Both branches drop down into the mission valley just west of the mission (which is inside the low resolution area): ECR-11
