Fred,
Do a search on El Recreo and Pablanos. You'll find many posts about them both. Recreo is our favorite.

Absolutely agree. Poblano's (there are two, equally good) is wonderful. The guy at the first one on the left as you're heading south puts on a better show---he sorta flicks the makings into the taco. I heard Asadero's was good if not better, but haven't tried it yet.

They're all great! Especially when I'm trying to make it through heading southbound. I'll honk my horn and you can just pull over at the nearest stand.

Pick any stand.

Just pull over. ;D

Look for Dos Hermanos! Outstanding carnitas there. On the right hand side, going south, just before the turnoff to Estero Beach.
Can't beat it..... Bob H

Dos Hermanos.....is that the place that makes its own pork rinds? They have a big frying vat out front. That is one hell of a place for carnitas.

If you want fish tacos; hang a right at the Y going to Bufadora -- just about 1/4 mile up on your right hand side by the Alberca....not sure which one, but the taco stand is Lupita's and she's the only one with fish tacos in the area and they are OUTSTANDING; if you want to stay on the main drag either Poblano's would fit the bill. Fab tacos.... good price.

We ate at the one on the right, next to the chicken stand. Best we have ever had. one dollar each and they were pretty full. We had been told to go to the one on the left just up the street but we went to the wrong one(if you can call that wrong:moon:) Maybe next time we get there we will try the right one! LOL

That's it! Here's one of their carnitas plates!

And the home made pork rinds...

And the big VAT out front...

Does it come with an angiogram?

Just kidding - getting down and dirty with a kilo of Dos Hermanos' carnitas must be experienced. Just not too often . . .

We agree Paulina, Recreo is best. Rich and Linda, Recreo is the one you found on accident. The major advantage Recreo has over Pablano, in my estimation at least, is the Huarachi. Not the shoe, but here is what it is. Two tortillas laid flat on the griddle covered with cheese until melted, then piled high with all the regular taco stuff. Served open faced like a tostada, but the tortillas are still soft. I doubt if anyone can eat two of these monsters.

Dos Hermanos kept my boys fed at the 250 race a couple of weeks ago. They stopped by on their way to Punta Banda, bought 2.5 k. of carnitas. Dern says they called it something like 'Masisa" (spelling?) Someone chime in here and give us the proper name as they really liked it. It was without the fat and gristle for the most part. The coolest part is the tortillaria is right next door.

They had carnitas breakfast, lunch and dinner out at Cabras for two days and never got tired of it.

P<*)))><

ps. Looking forward to Recreo in a couple of weeks! Tom, we also love the Huarachis too. Another thing I like about Recreo is that when it's our turn at the counter Sabino knows it, and takes care of us. He always remembers the way Cody likes her taco and has it ready for her as soon as she jumps out of the truck.

Dos Hermanos also has something that is a little more cardio friendly than the carnitas (not that there's anything wrong with carnitas, but I've been advised to lay off of that stuff, or die) -- their roasted chickens. They have a huge, blazing and clearly not OSHA approved rotisserie with dozens of pollos on it. When I'm heading down late and know I'll have no time to cook on a first night when setting up, a roasted chicken with sides of beans, tortillas and salsa are the ticket. Beats the snot out of El Pollo Loco any day of the week. The hardest thing is driving down with the smell of that roasted meat filling the truck cab, and resisting the urge to pull over and snarf it down on the spot.

I too vote for Recreo for tacos. I get a kick out of the way the server flips the beans in the air and catches them in the taco.

I believe the term is "maciza" for the leaner shoulder/rib meat. Carnitas "mixtas" (mixed) have, well, other parts included . . .

Is the chicken stand next to it any good? Do they cut it in half down the middle like all the Mx. chicken we've had so far?
