Servel in Baja?

I'm thinking of getting a new Servel. Can I get one in Baja or do I take it down with me. So far I have total costs of about $1200 in Northern California. Is there an outlet for used propane friges in Baja?

Santiago....I can only think of one offhand, but know there are others.....check with Wahoo RV in Cabo. They used to have good deals on propane fridges.

Just remembered...Ace? Hardware in La Paz had some a few years back, but their prices were pretty high...maybe better these days.

santiago

i think propane refrigerators are "old" technology...
the "urban myth" that they are the best just true

they do last forever but...
i won't be here later to see if it does:saint:

i think the "old guys" remember the days without technology, inverters, inexpensive batteries, internet...etc

their propane frig was the ONLY thing that worked...

all the time i hear complaints how the "old thing" just
"doesn't work correctly"
"hot in the back and heats up the place"
"gotta turn it over so the "jucies" move around"
"freezes the food"
etc etc

ELECTRICTY is the "future"
a new electric frig will only use 126w of power when running
and it doesn't run ALL the time

don't get me wrong...Servel is one of the best but...
times change...

just think about it before you plunk down $1200 somolies for and antique

now this is JUST my humble opinion and...
i have a FEW:lol:

Santiago , I agree with Bob and Susan

The old Servels were great for their time but there are better choices now.

Take a look at Sun Frost refers- they're all electric but you can get them in 12,24 120 V models

Santiago,
Phil, 4baja and Soulpatch all run 110 chest freezers off their solar (and generators at times). I run a combo 110 refer and freezer when I'm in camp. Phil even ran his on solar while gone for over a year with beach bob cheking it ever so often. There was eventually a failure and he doesn't run it while he is'nt there anymore. The freezers and combos can be bought for well under $200 In the states at home Depot. Have not checked Ensenada HD, but maybe able to get them there. We have all had good luck with these and put our $ into our solar systems.

small electric chest freezer at lowes in usa = $160
same thing in ensenada = $600
import it!!!

there is a "differance" in appliances in mexico!!!
our refrig is a mexican...
works great but...
the door doesn't automaticly close..go figure

little things we are used to are not there...

our stove is a whirlpool...
another mexican product called ACROS...
NO temp control on the oven
just 1 2 3 4 5
you have to "watch" the food cook...
too hard for susan...
we're going to have to get a new one from the states
another 500 somolies GONE!!!

If you don't like or can't get the Servels, you might try the new hi-tech Crystalcolds...I have 2 that are excellent lite-weight 12cfters, use very little propane, make July ice cubes muy pronto, and have reliable US warranties. Very economical, plus you can be more mobile with these than an electric...just use a small propane bottle anywhere. For info, pricing, shipping, etc. contact Fletcher Dunne at info@warehouseappliance.com. I can recommend these reefers...tested in the Baja summers.

As with most all off-grid solar homes these days, I also use an electric 12cft Whirlpool as a beer fridge in my bar. Runs with very little power drain off my solar power system. I have an insulated box around it, plus I have it on a timer for night shutdowns, always stays cool...then powers on with the sun...my beer is ice cold toda tiempo!

These electric reefers are very cheap...$325 in La Paz Electra tienda....the solar power system to run things like this is not. ;)

Personally, I would not be without some propane backup concerning my beer.

We looked at Abrahams in Santa Rosalia and found that the stoves and refrigerators were within $100 of prices in US. We had someone tell us about the stoves with thermostats so we discovered that potential error before buying. When bringing one down from the states, almost all have an electric control panel and due to frequent power outages, we were told that it is very common for the control panel to go out, which costs about $300 to replace. All of the stoves we saw in Santa Rosalia were without the electric control, and we really liked the tortilla grille in the middle.

Pescador...ditto...we also have bought many appliances from Abrahams in Sta. Rosalia and have found them to be very good. Automatic clothes washer, window air-conditioner, hot water heater to name a few. A reliable store with good prices...considering the import and freight of US counterparts.

I have 2 of the newer Servels and they have worked without any problems for about 5 years. They are small so if you need space you'll need another one. There are a lot of good gas fridges out there today. Shop the internet. $1200 seems to be the going price for the Servel. Electrics are great if your solar system is big enough but I probably would have both now just because if one or the other quits you can save most of the good stuff if you catch it in time.

Abrahams in Sta. Rosalia, good people and good price for our area. My oven has a temp control but have never used it. I guess that says a lot about my cooking habits:yes:

I have a couple of Danby mid-sized 7.8 cf propane fridges that are way more efficient than the old beast of a Servel they replaced. I usually run only one, except when I've stocked up for guests, parties, etc. The freezers make ice quickly and can accomodate ice trays, frozen food and my ice cream maker tub. Beverage Factory in San Diego carries them, and with things the way they are in the economy, you may be able to talk them down on price.

CrystalCold problems

Many problems with Crystal Cold fridges. Factory warranty support not good ! 2 to 5 years life depending on full time use or seasonal use ! Other good proven brands out their.
