Mexican beer talk

Being the frugal shopper that I am, I will sometimes avoid pricey imported beers. This was generally the case with the Dos Equis Ambar beer. I always like the Clara but that was fairly easy to find on sale.

Recently, the Ambar is showing up on sale at Smart and Final, Rite-Aid and Long's. To the budget alcohol fan, these outlets are legendary in SoCal. They lure clientel in by deeply discounting alcoholic beverages. I have seen 12 packs of bottles for 8.99-9.99. Solo cerveza en botella, para mi.

Man, I must say, this Dos Equis Ambar is my new favorite beer. It has the body of a Pacifico without the peculiar aftertaste. Not as heavy as a Negra Modelo, it can be drunk even in the hot of day and pairs quite well with the usual beer foods. Seems like it's somewhere in between a Bohemia and a Negra (which I also love).

What a dolt I have been to ignore this beer for so long.........

I was recently lured into a Taco Tuesday at an El Torito by co-workers (I hate El Torito's; th epitome of a gringofied mexican restaurant!) and discovered they had a Dos Equis on tap that the barkeep called Especial. Seemed like the same stuff........DEEELICIOUS!

Is the Dos Equis Ambar available in Mexico in returnable cases of bottles? Quantity becomes important AFTER establishing quality.

Any other Ambarficionados out there?

i like the clara, just for the supposed weight benefits:lol::lol::lol:.

however, i do still have a 12 pack of the Noche Buena circa 2006:cool: gonna ration that bad-boy until next season, I HOPE!!!!

btw, rite aid is THE cheapest place for beer in san diego (considering gas prices and travel times)....got a 30 pack of tkt yesterday for $17 and sometimes its $15. not the best beer, but hey, this is a thread about CHEAP beer!:bounce:

Woody ----

Open that 12PAK of NB and drink it. It's not vino. Age ruins it. In the time you spent reading this, it deteriorated. Hurry Woody, hurry. Save that beer. Don't let it die of old age.

Have to agree with ya Hook. Dos Equis amber is a really good all round beer, the special lager being a little too skunky for me.

Prefer Bohemia over all other Mexican beers . But only with food.

Hey Hook,

I AGREE with you, DOS EQUIS AMBER is a great tasting Cerveza. IMHO, it's even better when you drink it out of a chilled beer glass. I always keep a couple in the freezer on standby.

And you and Woody are both right about Rite-Aide. Their beer prices are great. Even when not on sale, they're usually lower than most other chains. I often can buy Pacifico there for $8.99 a 12 pack. In other chain stores, it can be almost double that.

And to WOODY...As Dennis said, DRINK the Noche Buena VERY SOON. Beer is only at it's best for about 90-100 days, and maybe less if it's gotten too warm or been allowed to get warm and cool off over and over. If it's kept in a refrigerator, it will be better for a bit longer. Sometimes, when it has deteriorated, if you shake it up a bit, you'll see pieces of gunk that have formed as part of the deterioration process. At that point, it's history for sure.

Here's to raising a cold one!

If any of you can visit the Tijuana Brewery, I highly recommend that treat! Located right below Ferna's house (note the drip irrigation tube leading down the hill with Ferna's mouth on one end)!

Awesome dark beer... a Czekoslovakian brewmaster at the controls...

Dos Equis Amber and Bohemia have always been my favorite Mexican beers. Unfortunately we canīt get it here in Baja Sur. The Modelo and Pacifico distributers have a monopoly here. Pacifico doesnīt cut it for me, and any clara is too much like gringo (Bud, Coors) beer.....blech! (yes, it is spelled correctly....if I had belched, that would have depicted satisfaction).:(

Try Pacifico again (and again)... You will discover it's wonders and quality!

My first time was not enjoyed because I was used to lighter beers like Modelo, Tecate or Dos Equis... It wasn't long before I appreciated the full flavor of Pacifico!

Ferna, I am getting no love on finding out if the Amber is available at a Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma Agencia in Baja. Maybe you could run by one some time on your errands and see if it is available.

Would be at a Tecate distribudor, if it exists.

That's because When Pacifico was bought out by whoever, could have been BUD, it became a milder beer. Totally new recipe.:lol::lol::lol:
