Boat Use In Mexican Waters

We are moving to MEX for an extended vacation (11 months) in September. We are bringing (towing) a Sea Doo 18' Speedster Jet Boat (wake board, skiing and such). It will never be in the water overnight.

Although I have read a number of other posts, I am not clear on what is required for legal registration(s) and use. Although we are not interested in fishing and will not have fishing gear on the boat, we are going to register it for this purpose for the year should a friend or family member get the bug.

Can those that have insight share? Any difference known if the boat will be used in both baja and mainland waters?

Sorry for the hair loss on this repeated question....stay tuned I have more. Thank you, Tim

Of course you will need to carry your US documentation with you for boat, trailer.

The rules change from location to location but you sound like a candidate for a temporary importation permit. 10 years-50 dollars, last I heard. Must apply in person to an office although many marinas provide this service for you for a fee).

Where will you be, mostly? The TIP rules seem to be different from location to location.

Oh yeah, if you ever plan on carrying so much as a single fish hook on the boat, you will need a Mexican fishing boat permit, too. Those can be acquired stateside and it is much easier to do so.

How will you handle being in the country longer than 180 days?

Thank you Hook. We will be spending some of our time in La Paz, but the majority on the time mainland in Puerto Vallarta. Although I do not plan to fish I did just obtain a fishing boat application from Conapesca just in case of a guest desire or an unknown 'hook on board'. We plan to travel to Guadamala and Peru while we are in MX so we believe we will be able to renew or 180 days each time; correct?

Temporary import at the same place you obtain a temporary car import?

Boat, motorcycle, OTR, etc. TIP's can be obtained at the same Banjecito that issues vehicle TIP's.

Boat TIP's are needed for anything over 14'. Most of Baja doesn't seem to care about boat TIP's but some COPT (Captain of the Port) are insisting on them if you want a Port Entry Permit. Like everything in Mexico, it all depends on the official that is standing in front of you at the time (this is the RCNC that I mention on my website) :P

Since I don't have a Ski Doo, I don't know if they are elligable for the 10 year permit, but they might be.

There is also a Banjercito website where you can apply for TIP's in advance (including boats), but it isn't very user friendly, especially if you don't read Spanish! Check my website (under Border FAQ) for more info.

In any case, please let me know how it goes so I can update my webpage with some current, first-hand info on Ski Doo's.

Thanks

On the mainland for use North of Guaymas you don't need a TIP or any type of import permit. This was a rule change about a year and a half ago.

South of Guaymas you will need an import permit. You can get a 10 year TIP at the border (Banjercito office open 24 hours). Doing any part of it in advance would be zero benefit to you. Aduana will want to visually see the boat.

You must have original documentation for your boat, no copies. I was once denied a TIP for having a color copy of my coast guard certificate of documentation. They were the only officials to ever notice the absence of the raised seal.

Thank you for the information JZ. We will be south of Guaymas. Is the TIP location actually several miles past the border like the place for the TIP for the vehicle?
