death/life

Well, I think the impression is that the desert/sea of Baja is a fairly barren place. But... if one takes the time to look closely - looking for details and patterns - one can see how 'productive' the region is by the remains of the critters left behind (after death). Much like BMG's crab photo. I know I'm 'preaching to the [Baja] choir' when I say this, but after my last trip this reality became really obvious to me.

Much of the enjoyment I get from visiting Baja is the ability to see details that I miss in my daily life back at home. Baja is special to me, in part, because I am able to see the details of life when I am there. Who said 'Life is in the details'?

For those who like dead things on the beach, you should check out playas de tijuana in the winter. The Coronado Islands are directly west and the windward sides are full of seals and the like. When the old guys croak the winter storms often push the carcasses to the beach. Some really big fellas end up on the beach, much to the delight of the neighborhood's feral dogs.

Having a scientific bent, I've watched the decomposition process with interest. It's sort of from the inside out resulting in deflated looking animals. In a week or two it's ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

I'll take some photos if anyone is interested.
